Latham is a good player. I'm not sure he's athletic enough to stick at T in the NFL.
You DO realize that the majority of starting RTs in the NFL played RT in college, right?

It wouldn't shock me if Harbaugh doesn't view Slater as his LT of the future. He's a bit shorter/smaller than the guys he's normally liked at T.

Because you're looking at it through the lens of a fan of the team that employs Travis Kelce (and Andy Reid).

Kelce is the ultimate move TE - he doesn't play in-line very often. And so the RT doesn't get much help from our TEs because that's not how we use them. But for the vast majority of teams, those that use their TEs inline, the RT can be an Andrew Wylie type who just needs to not get beat across his face every snap and we can give you a little help at TE.

And that's double so for a team like the Chargers. The same reason Harbaugh wanted Alt can also explain why it's just necessary for him to have him. If you're gonna be a run-first team, you're gonna have powerful blocking TEs. You're gonna keep your back(s) in the backfield almost all the time.

And all of these are assets that can be used to protect an average RT.

If you're the Chiefs, having bookend OTs that can be left on an island is MASSIVE. If you're the Chargers? Eh...not really.

Which leads me to believe he doesn't think Slater is the long term LT.

I've been wrong before, rarely, but man it's just hard for me to consider taking Alt a bad play with the way I viewed him as a prospect.

Alright Jim. If Suamataia isn’t what we hoped for in a LT, you go ahead and let Slater walk. I proooomise we won’t sign him and drop 40 points/game on you twice a year.

Deal?

Yeah - if we thought there was some chance that Slater would hit the market, I'd shut the wallet right now. No Bolton and Smith, that's for damn sure. Maybe Creed.

And then give Slater that big fat FA pay day to play LT for us for a half-decade or more. He'd hit the market at 27.

Now I think O.City is right - he'll get tagged and traded. But if he became a FA somehow, I'd be all over that.

He had the great rookie year, then the missed season with a torn bicep and then last year....was he as good last year? I didn't really remember hearing much about him.

It's Kiimo from Overland Park but I can't speak for where everyone else in this thread that disagrees with you is from.

Harbaugh is playing Marty football. While living in a RV. He isn't a serious person.

Probably one of the 5-6 best pass blocking OTs in football last year.

Wirfs is better, Darrisaw is probably better, Tunsil is something of a pass rushing specialist.

But after those 3 I think you're looking at a group of guys who could all be at the top of the pile with Williams, Mailata, Smith and Slater.

Yeah - I think that would fit alright...

Meanwhile Harbaugh sees some guy like Braden Smith and feels all tingly in his groin because he can run block from the OT position.

Okay, Jim. You do you, buddy.
