Mt. Rushmore by Position - Wide Receivers

Vote for EIGHT to go on this Mount Rushmore.

This is Chiefs players only, so if you want to vote on other NFL players, I'll remind you that the Chiefs have the greatest players so this is essentially the same thing.

We have way too many great players to limit our discussion to just one Mount Rushmore, so I thought it would be good to discuss the Mount Rushmore by position.

Here's how I'll post them up.

If a position has one person on the field (e.g., quarterback, center, tight end), the Mount Rushmore will have four players.

If a position has two people on the field (e.g., cornerback, offensive tackle, wide receiver), the Mount Rushmore will have eight players.

If a position has a varied history of one or two people on the field (e.g., defensive tackle, running back, inside linebacker), the Mount Rushmore will have six players.

I'll put up a poll that will contain three to four times the number of available slots at a minimum. The candidates will include the players with the most career starts at that position, plus any player who ever made a pro bowl.

I'll use PFR as a reference, and will manually change any positions that are obviously an error (e.g., they list Joe Valerio as a center for some reason).

Wow...what a shitty time we've had with WRs. I couldn't find 8 worthy of votes!

Reek
Paige
Carson
Taylor
Bowe

Also Worthy because he's going to be a HOFer

Interesting trivia: if you remove three pro bowls to WRs that were primarily for returns, then Tyreek Hill represents 35 percent of all WR pro bowls in the 64 years of Chiefs history.

I find myself having a major bias in favor of the guys who played important roles on Super Bowl winning teams.

Being a good player for a decent period of time on a shit team doesn’t move the needle much for me anymore.

I remember being kind of excited by Larry Brunson as a kid, but apparently I wasn't a very good talent scout at that age.

Given our team's history and current status, Mt. Rushmore becomes an interesting question. For far too long, the only Rushmore candidates were obvious guys from the old days who played a long time. But now we can consider guys who had iconic moments in big games even if their careers weren't that long with the Chiefs.

I voted for Sammy Watkins for our Mt. Rushmore solely on his 2019 playoff performance. He gained Chiefs immortality for the clinching catch against the Titans and the long pass in the Super Bowl. I don't really care that he didn't play that long for us.

Man, KC has not had a ton of great WRs, that's for sure.

I went with:

Tyreek Hill
S. Paige
O. Taylor
W. Davis (still remember that TD catch from Montana tip-toeing down the EZ line vs. DEN)
JJ Birden (always had a soft spot for that guy)
Dante Hall
Bowe
A. Rison

Honorable mention: Sammy "Solar Lizard King" Watkins

I liked Davis and Birden, though maybe they were elevated a bit by Joe Montana throwing to them.

They always seemed like a very non-Schottenheimer pair of receivers to me. A ground and pound guy like Marty went with two diminutive receivers? Birden was smaller than an average woman at Wal Mart.

Moving down the list, here's some trivia you may not know. Chiefs receiver Barry Pearson started his career with the Steelers, and after no action all season he got into a playoff game due to an injury by another receiver. He was the intended receiver on the play that led to the Immaculate Reception by Terry Bradshaw and Franco Harris. (The ball wasn't thrown to him due to pressure, but he was the receiver for the play as called.)

That TD catch by Davis from Montana will live in my heart forever.

JJ just made some ridiculous acrobatic catches, but then would drop a ball that hit him right between the numbers, lol. But in a time when the Chiefs offense was mostly 3 yards and a cloud of dust, he was a fun watch.

A Chiefs Mt Rushmore of WRs poll without even a mention of Bobby Sippio and we're supposed to take it seriously?

You should stick to Mansion Mania Rainman.
