It is kind of strange that KC never picked QBs--even when they needed one--leading up to Mahomes. I'm not sure why that is but it's not due to Veach's brilliance considering they also didn't pick QBs before he was there. And for that matter, there were some decent QBs in those drafts between 2013, when Reid and Veach arrived, and 2017. But KC didn't pick them. Hell, Dak Prescott was available until the 4th round in 2016 (Ironically, they picked him because they failed in their attempt to get Paxton Lynch). Why didn't Veach find Prescott? |

If you look at who talented evaluators had at number 1 and 2 over the last 10-20 years, that doesn't really seem like something to get excited about.
Desperately needing a QB, and picking outside the top 5, you basically have to say: Is this person smart enough? Is this person decent and hard working? (these first two should have avoided Paxton Lynch, but Elway was a bit of a size queen) Does this person have adequate physical tools? Does this person have reasonably refined technique? And then roll the dice. Anyone who thinks it isn't rolling the dice is fooling himself. |

It's not like he knew they'd get Mahomes the next year. The point about "my coach" only proves my point. He didn't know how good Mahomes would be and no one else did. If they did, there would have been an all out bidding war for the first pick. |

There's definitely luck involved but also alot of skill. It takes a certain eye to stand out and Veach certainly has it.

Dak and Patrick aren't even REMOTELY comparable. System QBs like Dink and Dak are a dime a dozen.

Dak was OK in the SEC certainly not Nix level bad, but nothing that makes an elite talent evaluator want to grab him.

If you knew for sure that you would pick Mahomes the next year, and that Mahomes would be one of the best ever, you still would pick Dak. |

Another point--it's not like there's a whole lot of daylight between Nix's week 1 performance and Williams or Daniels. They sure didn't look as different as the consensus rankings would suggest.

The difference between Williams and Daniels and then nix is the fact they looked much better in college and were much better prospects than Nix. Nix is a check down master his whole college career and that’s just not going to cut it in the NFL.
