Why would they do that ? Is there any benefit?

Presumably it means they think he is a strong chance to feature in at minimum practice squad with call ups so are looking to free up the IPP exemption slot to bring in another developmental project.

Really? I hadn’t seen this.

Admittedly this dude was the first I’d heard of it but it seems like a free way to keep an extra dude.

Probably just figure that he's closer to relevant than the OT they had under the exemption last season. Don't remember his name, but they carried him on the PS all season last year and that's where that exemption becomes useful.

If they think Rees-Zammit may actually make the squad this year, use the protection on the OT because by all accounts last season, that guy was FAAAAAR away, but incredibly athletic/talented.

Probably just basic resource allocation - one slot, use it on the guy who's less likely to make the team but with a slightly higher ceiling, thus a far better candidate for the international exemption anyway (which wouldn't apply if Rees-Zammit is a roster player)

His speed seems legit from chatter coming out of the minicamp, and with the way this coaching staff craves speed they will give him a chance.

Yeah, Nick Jacobs and Matt Derrick were both raving about how fast he looked and also said he wasn't as raw as they expected. Nick said he's the closest player in terms of build in the legs to Tyreek Hill.

The dude has real pedigree having exceled in another professional sport so I'm not sure I'd just write him off as any random training camp hero.

It will be *so* much fun if he can carve out a role.

I don't know how the IPP works, does he take up a roster spot on the 53 this year or is he basically 54th on the roster?
