Did AJ Smith trade way Eli Manning being good for the Chiefs?

"In 2004, the New York Giants and the Los Angeles Chargers made a trade that would forever change the course of both franchises. Moments after the Chargers selected Eli Manning with the first pick in the NFL draft, the team traded him to the Giants for Philip Rivers.

That deal had massive repercussions for both clubs. The Chargers used the extra picks to build a consistent winner around Rivers. The Giants held on to Osi Umenyiora, whose pass-rushing prowess helped Manning lead the team to two Super Bowl wins.

While both teams benefitted greatly, the Chargers never won the Super Bowl under general manager A.J. Smith. Despite that, Smith says trading away Manning was “the most satisfying moment for me in my career,” according to SB Nation..."

Eli Manning isn't very good and never has been. At his best he was a top 8ish sort of quarterback. Rivers, OTOH, has been a legitimate MVP candidate on several occasions and a multi-time All Pro.
An entire 1 hour television special could be produced around your comments.
I have never seen a QB look equally as great and terrible as Eli. One play will have you saying
"Wow, what touch and precision" and the next play will have you saying "A junior high school
QB would have shown better wisdom."

His career is quite the conundrum

AJ Smith was a more egotistical version of Carl Peterson.

It's too bad they didn't make Manning pout longer before trading him.

And the answer is no - Rivers is better than Eli Manning. He's ALWAYS been better than Eli Manning. And the fact that Manning is going to get into the HoF is one of the most laughably ridiculous things we will ever see.

Eli Manning isn't very good and never has been. At his best he was a top 8ish sort of quarterback. Rivers, OTOH, has been a legitimate MVP candidate on several occasions and a multi-time All Pro.

The Chargers would've been total dogshit the last 15 years or so with Eli Manning under center.
True. But it is funny that his big brother had to have Suoerfarce 50 rigged in order for him to equal Eli's SB win total.
