Eric Berry Released!

It's done. The spirit is free. (Don't go towards the light.)

Problem is we expect pro athletes to bounce back so quick from injuries because of salary when in reality they really shouldn't because the body needs the natural time to heal and recover like any normal person.
There isn’t an injury. There is a deformity causing pain. As soon as it was disclosed that it was a Haglund Deformity and it was already decided he wasn’t playing through the pain there should have been surgery.

This is what drives me nuts about ****ing reeruns on this site using anything that Andy Reid or anyone in this organization says as evidence to prove their point. They will literally always give the company line and wont ever say anything negative or ground breaking.

Was the ability to seek medical specialist help during the entirety of the 2017 season and 2018 off season "within his control"? Why didn't he go on IR in 2017 and seek advanced help for his achilles and haglunds? Why wait until the 2019 off season to find out that nothing can be done to cure your condition?
And why waste a roster spot all that time, coming back in to play a game only when it "moves" you to do so, and then playing like shit when you DO play because your condition hasn't been properly diagnosed/treated?

That seems pretty ****ing selfish to me. You took the money but did nothing to better yourself during a QB transition year when you could have been getting yourself ready to come back in 2019 and play legitimate football. That sounds like stealing a paycheck to me. It also sounds like stealing valuable time that was given in order for you to handle your medical business OUTSIDE of the team quack doctors and at the very least, get an understanding of what you were truly facing.
But hey, thanks for hanging out on the sideline and providing "leadership". That worked out real well for everybody.

It's a shame we don't know all of the details my Canuck friend, because if we did I'd be willing to bet that there was definitely some "bad guy" going on with Eric in this matter too.
Exactly. Thank you. We don’t know the details to the story as why things unfolded the way they did with him. Im not sure if calling him selfish is the right thing to do? I mean that is your opinion and not gonna take that away from you or anything but we just don’t know.

I could understand the 2018 off season and 2019 season as probably being within his control. I think it was a matter of weighing things out on a weekly basis between him and the team? Thats what it seemed like. I think the Chiefs wanted him there considering the garbage play they had at safety this past season.

Maybe he wanted to be there and play but both he and the Chiefs didn’t know when he’d be ready? Or maybe in his head he thought he could play but physically it was a different story. Injuries and dealing with them could be a tricky animal. But the bottomline is we don’t know. It is easy to misinterpret these situations imo.

He thought he could play through or at least manage the pain but couldn’t. It was a wrong decision but nothing that was obviously malicious that he just wanted to steal money.

Berry was an albatross around this team's ****ing neck. He was standing in the way of Mahomes achieving greatness for this team and the city of KC.

I smiled when I saw he had been released. It didn't have to be this way, and it's sad, but when you get down to it, the only person to blame in this situation is Berry himself.

Whatever, though. Berry got paid. I'm sure he doesn't give a shit what some fans online think of him. Therefore, I don't feel sorry for him. Not one bit.

But he knew he would get paid regardless. Which, IMO, influenced the course he chose regarding a plan of action.

Interesting nugget from Nate Taylor on The Athletic:

“For much of this offseason, the Chiefs didn’t want to release Berry.

The team was optimistic a few weeks ago when Berry traveled to Green Bay to get a second opinion from Dr. Bob Anderson on his right heel, the part of his body that forced him to miss 15 games last season. Anderson told Berry, a five-time Pro Bowler, that his heel could mend itself without a procedure. Berry wanted to return to the team to prove himself yet again, but the Chiefs ultimately decided that his inability to stay on the field — in playing just four games in the last two seasons — and his large contract were too much of a gamble.”

They were right IMO to release him, if the only treatment for Berry was to let it heal on its own. Not worth the risk of a repeat of this past season.

What's bad is we now have confirmation in the offseason from new medical evaluations that line up with what we heard many months ago, which is that this doesn't require surgery and it's a pain management issue.

If that has been the case all along, then why should any team trust him to actually play the game at this point? It's just going to be the same thing the Chiefs watched him do all season. "I don't feel good enough to play" even though the doctors say you're healthy enough.

I’m shocked to read that this foot specialist supposedly thought this thing would mend on its own. How? We haven’t ever heard of that even being a possibility until now.

Weird. But I think the Chiefs made the right call. They basically had to roll the same set of dice that they rolled last year had he stayed.
