Although this contract is infamous, it’s weird that it gets brought up like it was some kind of awful contract. The reason the contract sucked is because the Mets got swindled by madoff. Bonilla actually was a decent player for the Mets the first time around.
Meanwhile Baltimore paid Chris Davis $160m guaranteed on a Bobby Bonilla like deferred contract and had to hit below .200 multiple times. Jacoby Elsbury was paid $150m to never play. And pujols took multiple years of Bonilla money way past his prime. It’s always funny to celebrate but it’s just interesting considering it’s way down the list of awful mlb contracts. |

The craziest thing about Chris Davis is that the team kept him around because they hoped the embarrassment would eventually drive him to negotiate a buyout. They kept playing him and playing him but he held strong and milked that contract for everything it’s worth.
