Because it's written very poorly.

It wasn't a visual disaster.

Star wars movies always LOOK good.

It's not like the story of the original trilogy was anything that amazing, the amazing part was how well the characters worked together. They were real, flawed people. The prequel trilogy was a mess because of the choice of actors. No chemistry between them and not much to relate to. The sequel trilogy has similar problems, there isn't anything to care about in the characters. Rey isn't even remotely human, has no flaws, doesn't have any romantic interests, knows everything about everything and uses the force better than anyone.

She is like Superman that is immune to kryptonite. There is never a worry that anything will happen to her.

I've never cared less for Star wars characters in my life. That's how poorly written this new cast is. And when you have to go and dig palpatine up from the grave? I mean come on...

But what about all the amazing character growth from Rey?

She went from being good at everything to being good at everything. It was REALLY DEEP and engaging. I'm riveted that she might continue to succeed at everything she tries. Who needs a character archtype when you can just create someone who flatly goes through the story being dragged along by a less than engaging plot.

Sidious will return in spirit form inhabiting the body of British actor Matt Smith who plays a new crimson lightsaber wielding villain.

Ian was on set during all scenes shot with Smith providing voice work in the background for Adam driver to interact with. It is unclear whether Smith was a secret apprentice or simply a tool to be used but it has been somewhat confirmed that snoke was indeed the dark presence that Sidious felt in the unknown regions. It is also speculated that there will be video recordings or holograms shown depicting sidious recruiting snoke as his apprentice to overthrow Vader between the time of empire and Jedi.

When the studio is copying bad ideas from the EU, you know they are scrambling.

Matt Smith isn't even in the movie.

In any case, when posting potentially spoilery material, use spoiler tags.

He may be out as the actor, but the all hooded scenes where Ian was present are very much filmed.

In any event, we're clearly back to sloppy fan service.

Maybe JJ was original this time.

The actress recently revealed that, while her role in the film is minimal and the film itself hasn't been completed, reading the script inspired a powerful emotional reaction in her.

“When I read his script that he wrote I cried,” Russell shared with The Associated Press. “I mean who knows what it will turn out to be and I hope it remains true to what he originally wanted.”

With The Rise of Skywalker being that much further removed from the original trilogy, there are many avenues that Abrams could explore, but Russell assures that the story honors the legacy of the series.

“He’s not trying to change it to be something else,” the actress admitted. “He really respects what it is.”
