what would it have accomplished? everyone basically agrees that racism and homophobia are bad now, that's why Gruden "resigned" less than a week after the original story came out lol.

There is a sense that it's not so much about not wanting to be disparaged so much as wanting to be the center of discourse and to be celebrated when the opportunity arises. They need to emotional lift of seeing someone, even someone peripheral like Reid, tearfully proclaim how saddened they are when evil people disparage such beautiful, wonderful, courageous and stunning people.

Also, there is a little bit of intrigue, whether someone will 'fumble' the rhetoric and say something that will bring on another mishegas.
