Sounds to me like you got in the "Friends Zone" and couldn't get out. I've been there and it sucks!

After meeting my wife, we went out one night and met up with some friends of hers. She introduced me as "just a friend". I pulled her aside and made sure she understood that I wasn't getting stuck in the friend zone again. I guess it worked. We'll be married 9 years next month.
