Harrison Butker's Commencement Speech? WTF

Oh, lord! Can we please just stay out of the news and start the season already?

"Butker bemoaned an erosion of traditional Catholic values in daily life, claiming that things like “abortion, IVF, surrogacy, euthanasia as well as a growing support for degenerate cultural values and media” come from “the pervasiveness of disorder.”

Butker told the women in the class that they’d been told “diabolical lies” about pursuing careers, and that his and his family’s success is a result of his wife’s focus on being a wife and mother, claiming that “her life truly started when she began living her vocation as a wife and as a mother.”

He criticized Biden for proclaiming his Catholic faith while being “delusional enough to make the sign of the cross during a pro-abortion rally,” accusing the president of making it appear “that you can be both Catholic and pro-choice."Butker told the women in the class that they’d been told “diabolical lies” about pursuing careers, and that his and his family’s success is a result of his wife’s focus on being a wife and mother, claiming that “her life truly started when she began living her vocation as a wife and as a mother.”

He accused world leaders of “pushing dangerous gender ideologies onto the youth of America,” and praised the students at Benedictine for embracing their religion with pride, but “not the deadly sin sort of pride that has an entire month dedicated to it.”

He also criticized the Catholic church and bishops and priests for “misleading their flocks” by prioritizing familiarity with their parishioners instead of being teachers, quoting Taylor Swift—girlfriend of teammate Travis Kelce—by saying “familiarity breeds contempt.”

The speech was largely criticized on social media and prompted a change.org petition calling for him to be released from the Chiefs.

*EDIT: Apologies, this thread apparently belonged in the DC forum, but I think we can all agree that we'd prefer our team stay out of the news unless its football related considering the offseason we've already had... looking at YOU Rashee Rice! lol

Please keep discussions civil.

There is a whole thread about this in the DC forum, where it belongs. The majority of us only give a shit that Butker continues to be a great kicker. I don’t give one damn about any of his beliefs.

Actually read a good chunk of the transcript this morning after hearing about it. This is a case study of people making more out of something because they want someone to demonize on the "other side". And of course he's going to talk about catholic values at a Catholic college, where he has shared values.

BTW, I'm saying this as apolitical, **** both sides, they both suck, are awful, and contribute nothing to the betterment of society.

Guy is religious and has religious viewpoints. Ok. People can get pissed about it and will find someone else to dehumanize and hate in a week.

Can he make a 50 yarder when the game is on the line? That's all I care about as long as he's not actually out attacking other human beings or physically harming them.

And this will inevitably end up in DC

Sheesh. Hopefully that's been misconstrued.

Have we confirmed it was actually Harrison Butker who made the speech? The alleged speech maker was pictured wearing a red durag and I don't think Harrison has enough drip to pull off wearing that.

Um...Taylor Swift did NOT come up with that phrase...ffs...

Quote:
What's the origin of the phrase 'Familiarity breeds contempt'?

The 6th century BCE storyteller Aesop is often credited with the coining of the phrase ‘familiarity breeds contempt’. That assumption needs a little picking apart though. Firstly, no original writings of Aesop survive and indeed he may not have been a real person but merely the nominal author of a collection of tales that changed over many centuries.
And calling for him to be released from the Chiefs...L-O-****ing-L
