A situation to monitor: Kelce’s contract.

So here’s a mild curiosity: Kelce was inked like two weeks ago and his year by year cap hits haven’t been released yet.

That stands in stark contrast to Mahomes and Jones (and virtually everybody else’s contracts. If you go to OverTheCap and Spotrac, neither has the contract updated. I’ve been checking daily, because of course I am.

There was a tweet the day of, by Mike Garofalo I think, that gave us the year cash payouts, but cash payouts on these big deals don’t always match up with the cap hits. The cash payout for this year is the same as his pre-extension cap number, but the cash payout for 2021 is actually 4m higher than the pre-extension cap number.

Obviously, this could very well be nothing. But a conspiracy theory you could embrace is that the cash payouts are far more flattering to the player and/or sensible to the general public than the actual cap hits, which could be ugly. I don’t even know what “ugly” would look like in this scenario, I’m just spitballing because stalling the contract info this long is somewhat unique.

The working relationship between Travis Kelce, Andy Reid and the Chiefs has been a match made in NFL/Chiefs Heaven.

Travis Kelce has rewarded the Chiefs with –
2013 – 3rd round pick, IR
2014 - 67 receptions, 862 yards, and 5 TDS
2015 - 72 receptions, 875 yards, and 5 TDS
2016 - 85 receptions, 1125 yards, and 4 TDS
2017 - 83 receptions, 1038 yards, and 8 TDS
2018 – 103 receptions, 1336 yards, and 10 TDS
2019 - 97 receptions, 1229 yards and 5 TDS

KC QBs have given plenty of throws to Travis –
2014 – 87 targets
2015 – 103 targets
2016 – 117 targets
2017 – 122 targets
2018 – 150 targets
2019 – 136 targets

Travis Kelce has been paid well for a TE in the NFL.
2013 - $1,108,304
2014 - $531,000
2015 - $678,000
2016 - $10,646,000
2017 - $3,418,750
2018 - $8,050,000
2019 - $10,930,000
2020 - $11,218,400.00
2021 - $13,250,000.00
2022 - $7,500,000.00
2023 - $13,250,000.00
2024 - $15,000,000.00
2025 - $17,250,000.00

To further that relationship, the Kansas City Chiefs have never threatened Travis Kelce’s opportunities as a TE with the draft or free agents.

Kansas City TEs since drafting Travis Kelce in the 3rd round in 2013.
2013 - Sean McGrath, Anthony Fasano, and Richard Gordon – Kelce was on IR
2014 – Travis Kelce, Anthony Fasano, Demetrius Harris, Phillip Supernaw
2015 – Travis Kelce, Demetrius Harris, James O’Shaughnessy, Brian Parker
2016 – Travis Kelce, Demetrius Harris, James O’Shaughnessy, Ross Travis
2017 – Travis Kelce, Demetrius Harris, Orson Charles, Gavin Escobar cut before season
2018 – Travis Kelce, Demetrius Harris, Deon Yelder, David Wells PS, Jace Amaro cut before season
2019 – Travis Kelce, Blake Bell, Deon Yelder, Nick Keizer PS, David Wells IR
2020 – Travis Kelce, Ricky Seals-Jones, Deon Yelder, Nick Keizer, Daniel Helm

Only TE draft pick has been in 2015 with James O’Shaughnessy 5th round (173)

The best TE FA signing may be with this year's signing of Ricky Seals-Jones.

Oh, the Kansas City Chiefs have also provided Travis Kelce with the best available QBs.

It is good to be a Chiefs fan.

I’ve no doubt he’s gunning for Canton and rings.

I just can’t believe he undersold himself that much.

11m/year for the next three years is almost criminal. Like, I can’t even believe Veach had the balls to ask for it.

You make some excellent points.

The only thing I would say is that while Kelce has made good money, he had the leverage to make far more than this deal offers him. This was more than a hometown discount, it was a hometown blue light special.

I agree that it is a good deal for the Chiefs but Travis Kelce and his agent Melvin Bratton recognize the positives for Travis playing for the Chiefs. Being a great player playing for a great team is going to add to his income through endorsements and personal appearances. This will also add to his future career possibilities.

Travis will have an excellent income throughout his NFL playing time and beyond.

Maybe - perish the thought in today's times - he just loves the Chiefs organization and didn't feel the need to squeeze them for every last penny he could get. Probably a hand-shake deal on a post-retirement spot in the organization, if he even wants one.

Didn't think I could be more of a Travis Kelce fan, but this deal and what it signifies seems to have done it. On the fast track to Ring of Honor then HOF. And so much personality it oozes out of his pores. I love this freaking dude (nh), he epitomizes what it is to be a Chief. One of my ATF's.

No he didn't. He was never going to get more than George Kittle. His contract was always going to be slotted behind Kittle's new deal.

That's why it got done literally right after George's.

Kelce is paid exactly as he should be considering his age.

If you’re thinking a team out there wouldn’t pay him more than the 11m he’s making over the next three years, you’re high.

He had a couple of years left on his deal...so those teams would have to part with some serious draft capital just to get the privilege of signing him.

Kelce knows he is still getting paid more money that he can ever figure out how to spend...and staying with the Chiefs is gonna get him multiple Super Bowls and a first ballot entry into the HOF. It was a no brainer for him...he wants the glory.
