Falcons taking calls on Julio Jones

Quote:
A hamstring injury limited Jones to just nine games last season, though he still put up strong numbers when he was on the field. He caught 51 passes for 771 yards and three scores as the Falcons finished the year 4-12. From 2014-19, Jones missed only four games and averaged 104 catches and 1,564 yards per season. SI Link.

From Peter King:
Quote:
Surprises? Keep an eye on Atlanta. I can’t predict any bombshells. But a few things would not surprise me. Most notably, the Falcons putting the framework of a trade together for star wideout Julio Jones, and making the trade effective June 2. That way, Atlanta could split Jones’ cap charge between 2021 and 2022 instead of getting bashed with it all this year. So if such a trade happens, I expect it could involve a future pick or picks, nothing this year. (A future second-round pick as compensation seems fair to me.) Because such a trade wouldn’t be official till June, no picks in this draft could be involved. As for the interested team or teams, I would guess Las Vegas; Jon Gruden couldn’t resist Antonio Brown, and I doubt he could resist Julio Jones. New England too, and a couple of teams with clear receiver needs—Tennessee and Baltimore.

Now, the Falcons don’t really want to trade Julio Jones. He’s a franchise legend. But he’s 32, entering his 11th season, coming off a banged-up year with seven games missed due to injury, and the Falcons are in cap jail. If they could off-load his money and cushion it by splitting it between this year ($7.75 million) and next ($15.5 million), Atlanta’s cap charge on Jones this year goes down by a tad more than $15 million.

One final note here, to be very clear: I am not reporting the Falcons will trade Jones, or will probably trade Jones. I am saying it would not surprise me if it happened.

Honeybadger extension this summer would likely free that up. If the Falcons draft Jamarr Chase at #4 and the Chiefs don't grab a wide receiver early I wouldn't be surprised...

Also, I'm assuming we get HB's deal done before the season, so that could free up some cap.

Again, all hypotheticals.
You would prefer it to not be $15M all in the first year. You really only want to acquire that much guaranteed salary when you're acquiring an ascending player with a year or two left on his deal.

No way I'm taking on that much guaranteed money for a guy that missed half a season with a hamstring injury, especially when he's had a half dozen hamstring injuries over the past 6-7 years.

Fair enough.

It's likely doubtful it goes down as it would be a luxury at this point. I'm just saying it would be a lot of fun if it were to go down and work out.

If Hardman is that good then why is everyone so anxious to get another WR? We've been desperate for a replacement for oft-injured Sammy Watkins for years. Both Hardman and Robinson have failed to show they can handle being a starter opposite of Hill.

Hardman is young though and showed up against the Jets. Maybe he is ready to take a big step next year. Teams used to always wait until a player's 3rd year. Hardman should stop doing dumb shit pretty soon. The biggest issue is that he doesn't seem to be where Mahomes expects him to be. Julio Jones will not have that problem.

Andy Reid prefers faster receivers, how much does Jones have left? I'm sure Andy would love having a big, physical guy like Jones out there. No more switching out Robinson to block anymore.

What with all the soft tissue injuries with Jones? He always seems to be playing with nagging injuries. Atlanta's strength and conditioning people suck?

Completely agree with this.

Big Cap hit, age of player, and battling hamstring injuries. Not a good combination.

I'm always in favor of trying to improve the team, but I would rather we spend our (2022) draft picks and money elsewhere.

With how bad Andy wanted JuJu I wouldn't be surprised if they went above and beyond to try to acquire Julio.

Juju wasn't going to cost draft picks and they weren't offering him $15M guaranteed.

Nobody is going to offer a high pick for Julio. None.

Look at the teams with the cap space to do it, doesn't make any sense for any of them.

Maybe the Colts to help out their mentally challenged QB.

I think he will be cut. Then its a different conversation.

Second - not sure I'd do this with Tyreek. I think Hill needs to be the man. Its his turf.

Julio is an elite WR though.

Andy's balls probably tickle just thinking about it.

Watch Veach pull this off for a 2022 4th and get Julio to restructure.

Who would you rather pay?

Julio or Ertz?

Reports out stating Ertz to be traded after the draft. Him and Kelce would be nice.

So is Sammy Watkins.

Again, he's 32. He's guaranteed $15M. And he missed half of last season with a hamstring injury, an injury he's had no less than SIX TIMES in his NFL career.

I honestly don't care how good he is. I wouldn't take him unless he was pretty much free. I want guys that can be relied upon to be suited up on game day.
