Considering the quick turnaround, free-agent running back Le’Veon Bell would not be able to suit up in time to face his former team, the New York Jets, this Sunday.

But could he join the Dolphins in the near future? Or could he perhaps be heading to Kansas City to join the Chiefs, the defending champions looking to add another talented skill player to their powerful offense?

A report from ESPN surfaced Thursday morning that Bell plans to sign with either the Dolphins, Bills or Chiefs. Since then, The Athletic has learned that it appears Bell has narrowed his options down to two landing spots: Kansas City and Miami.

While the Chiefs offer him an immediate shot at contending for a Super Bowl, a move to Miami would be an easy transition for Bell, who lives and trains in South Florida during the offseason.

Dolphins coach Brian Flores, typically tight-lipped, offered his thoughts on Bell on Thursday morning during a Zoom session with local reporters.

“As far as Le’Veon, that’s more of a question for (general manager) Chris Grier,” Flores said. “My focus right now is on the Jets and the talent they have as a team. I’ve said this before … he’s a very good player. Obviously, all conversations stay internal, and quite honestly, my focus has been on preparation for this week.

“But yeah, he’s a good player.”

A few hours later, Chiefs coach Andy Reid was more diplomatic. Reid knew general manager Brett Veach was continuing the Chiefs’ pursuit of Bell.

“I know Brett’s working through all of that,” Reid said. “Veach does all of that. I tell him, ‘If something happens, let me know — and then we roll.’”

Superstar Patrick Mahomes, the reigning Super Bowl MVP, knows he doesn’t need to make a public pitch to Bell.

One of Bell’s best friends in the league is Chris Jones, the Chiefs’ star defensive tackle. In past offseasons, Bell has worked out alongside Jones. The friends even posted a video on their Instagram accounts during the spring of 2018 — when Bell was a free agent before he joined the Jets — when they pondered about becoming teammates in Kansas City.

“Obviously a tremendous player, someone that can do it all — catch the ball, run the ball,” Mahomes said of Bell. “Whoever is in this locker room, we make sure they’re ready to go and make plays.”

Just how good of a player is Bell?

The three-time Pro Bowler has averaged 4.2 yards per carry with 46 touchdowns in seven seasons. Ultimately, the Jets and Bell broke their partnership following a tumultuous 19 months. While his production dipped over the past 17 games with the Jets, Bell, 28, is still considered by one industry source as a “game changing-type player.”

That could be exactly what the Dolphins need right now.

Miami was the worst rushing team in the league in 2019, and the front office made multiple moves in improving that portion of its offense over the offseason. The Dolphins acquired veteran running backs Matt Breida (via trade) and Jordan Howard (through free agency) in an effort to bolster the backfield.

However, five games into the 2020 regular season, it’s been all about second-year tailback Myles Gaskin, who, after having an impressive training camp, is proving to be one of the team’s most improved players. Gaskin often makes opposing defenders miss upon first contact and has earned his playing time, which has noticeably surpassed his peers.

Howard has been relegated to a short-yardage role and was inactive this past Sunday against San Francisco. Meanwhile, offensive coordinator Chan Gailey hasn’t called enough plays that feature Breida. That leaves the Dolphins with Gaskin as the lead back with 64 carries for 249 yards and one touchdown.

But Gaskin’s efforts aren’t nearly enough. Overall, the Dolphins are averaging 104.2 rushing yards per game, which ranks 21st in the NFL. Dig deeper and it isn’t pretty. The Dolphins are averaging only 3.7 yards per carry, ranked 30th.

Miami’s inability to establish a consistent and potent rushing attack has been a big reason why the offense keeps stalling short of the end zone. Just in the past two weeks, kicker Jason Sanders has been tasked with kicking 10 field goals.

The Chiefs, meanwhile, don’t have the same issues when it comes to scoring points at a blistering pace. Led by Mahomes, the Chiefs are 4-1 and are averaging 29.8 points per game.

One area of concern for the Chiefs’ offense is that the unit has struggled to run the ball at times, even with the addition of rookie running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire. With Bell, the Chiefs could see improvement in terms of running the ball in the red zone, on short-yardage situations and on first-down snaps. Behind Edwards-Helaire on the Chiefs’ depth chart are Darrel Williams, a third-year player, and Darwin Thompson, a second-year player. Williams hasn’t been effective as a receiver and Thompson hasn’t seen the field much since he fumbled against the Ravens late last month.

The Dolphins, according to sources, have the ability to offer Bell more money to join their roster. But Veach can counteroffer to Bell the chance to play next to Mahomes and be used as a versatile playmaker that can be given the ball in a multitude of ways within Reid’s dynamic offense.

“Who knows,” a source said of Bell’s upcoming decision. “Sounds like KC or Miami.”

The Dolphins’ offensive line consists of several newcomers, including three rookies, so patience will be needed as that group continues to mesh and develop together. But more than one month into the season, it’s clear the Dolphins aren’t scaring any opponents when they hand off or pitch the ball to any of their running backs. The lack of a rushing threat has also impacted the offense’s ability to effectively run play action.

So how does Bell fit in with Miami?

One scout said Bell’s patience in finding blocks would bode well with Miami’s current offensive line, which features rookies Solomon Kindley and Robert Hunt at right guard and right tackle, respectively. If the Dolphins were to sign Bell, they might need to part ways with at least one running back already on the roster, possibly Howard, who has just 14 rushing yards on 18 carries. Both Howard and Bell share the same agency, The Sports & Entertainment Group.

“We’ve got to improve the running game, play action, red zone, two-minute,” Flores said. “We’re working on it on a daily basis. Those guys are working hard along with the offensive line, the fullbacks and tight ends, getting the blocking where we need it and running it better.

“I think we’ve (run) it effectively in some instances, but we can be better overall.”

While Buffalo emerged as one of Bell’s top three choices, the Chiefs, from a competitive standpoint, and Dolphins, from a logistical one, have more appeal. It’s unclear which is the best incentive for Bell, who is owed $4 million, which was the remaining proportion from his signing bonus with the Jets. In essence, Bell made $27 million during a two-year contract with the Jets.

“Le’veon Bell is a very talented player,” Dolphins center Ted Karras said Thursday afternoon. “And I’m sure he can help an NFL franchise win some games.”
