got up sat morning and headed down to the blind at 5:15.

settled in, poured a cup of coffee and started munching on trail mix and beef jerky that the lovely wife packed in my goody bag. quickly found out she bought hot peppered jerky, instead of mild.

by 7:30 i'd crawled out to the edge of the timber, dropped trou, and sat across a fallen log. wrapped both arms around a hickory tree and let her rip. i think i put out a squirrels eye w/a flying peanut.

got back down to the blind and sat back down. went to grab a chew out of my bibs, and wtf...where's my orange vest? looked back up the hill and there it was, still hanging on a tree limb where i took my dump.

about 8:15, a nice buck came walking down the trail at about 40yards. went to sight him in, and wtf...i can't see the sight on the rifle. i left my bifocals back at the house.

goobered around till about noon, then headed back to the house and asked mrs. sec to grab my specs, cause i could see the deer, but not the rifle sights. she comes back and hands them to me saying, "the grandkids are staying here tonight. try to get back early so you can shower and shave. you look like otis campbell from andy griffith."

the rest of the day went pretty much the same. saw several, but no shots. yesterday was wet and cold. i hid out in one stand until i saw the wifes car leaving, heading to her mothers. i came out of the woods and threw my gear into the truck, where i sat all afternoon along the edge of the timber, drinking beer and listening to football.

i love deer season.

Got up around 6 saturday. Hunting an hour north of KC. Very windy. Didn't see shit until about 8. Fairly decent 6 point comes toward the blind and stops about 80 yards away straight down wind of me. I'm hoping a bigger buck sees him in the pasture and chases him off, but no luck. He loiters around for a few minutes then walks off. Didn't see anything else until about 5:15 PM and it was a few does. Too dark to take a 200 yard shot, so I had a whiskey and coke and hung out. Didn';t hunt sunday. Too wet.

very, Very frustrating bow season so far. 90+hrs in a tree in 2 weeks, trying to do everything right and seeing less than I did my first year.

I just don't get it.

Taking a few days off to work and then I'll go try again.

Damn rain has caused my gun hunting to a stand still. The creeks have risen too high, can't cross them to get to my stand. The one year I had everything planned out and knew where the bucks where, I can't get to them.

It was a frustrating opening weekend for me in Nebraska. First, I don't have access to any private land, so me and my buddies are stuck with CRP. We've hunted the same spot for the last 9 years now, and it's always been relatively fruitful. This year, there must have been 15 damn other guys out there. That's the price you pay hunting the CRP.

Saturday morning it was cloudy and relatively warm, but there was a breeze up. I got to my spot at about 6:10, 30 minutes before shooting time. At maybe 6:30, I heard something behind me. Looked over my shoulder, and a little doe was standing there, about 15 feet from me. I don't hunt in a stand, just pop a squat on a little folding stool. Anyway, she starts to wander further away, and I realize she's not alone. So I'm waiting for daylight, maybe another 10 minutes. Suddenly from out of nowhere another deer (I'm assuming a buck) jumps out of a little grove of pine trees and makes this loud honking noise (never heard that one before) and the two does take off, followed by this guy. It's still too dark to make out what it was. In any case, I'm feeling good about my spot, seeing 3 before shooting time never happens...

...those were the last friggin' deer I had a chance at both Saturday and Sunday. Both my buddies were able to pull out nice deer, but I got nuthin'. I'm going out solo this Saturday to try my luck where one of my friends was sitting. Hopefully, it won't be as crowded out there. That many hunters just makes me nervous.
