Townsend has actually held before so that's positive.

And I'm serious. They're !@#$ing punters. Job #1 is just don't shank it. And yeah, ideally you keep it out of the end zone, but as you've noted, unless you're punting inside their territory, even the damage from a touchback isn't always that bad (and Colquitt had gotten really bad about punts downed at the 17; whoopee!).

There's likely going to be very little difference in their respective contributions as punters. If one guy is shanking every 5th punt for 15-20 yards, then you can't have that and the other wins by default. But if both guys are giving representative efforts, I couldn't care less about a 1 yard difference in season-long Net Punting Average.

At that point give me the guy that's gonna handle a low/high snap and get it down for Butker. Extra points aren't sure things anymore either so you gotta be able to get those down because at the new distance, the timing actually matters.

If the two guys are even close in terms of their punting performance, I'll take the slightly worse punter if he's a better holder.
I wasn’t referring to shanking, but rather being able to place the ball when punting into a short field.

For instance, would I rather have the punter with the big leg who can consistently flip the field? Or the punter who can’t flip the field but can consistently pin teams (ie not punt into the end zone) when punting into a short field?

With this offense, give me the guy who can flip the field and give my defense a better chance. We don’t need to create points through field position like the Alex Smith years.

4th and 5 or less from midfield or less in a competitive game: I’m going for it 100% of the time with Mahomes at QB. I don’t think the super accurate punter is as valuable to this team.

We'd have saved about $4.3 million on the cap over the last 2 years with Dickson instead of Colquitt. It would've cost us Armani Watts which is...y'know...a pretty nominal cost.

Colquitt had been in sharp decline for several years and the juice just wasn't worth the squeeze from a cap standpoint. Another $4+ million in rollover wouldn't hurt to have in our pockets right now.
All of this. In that game against Mizzou, he was the MVP. The punter. I'd never seen it before and haven't since. I don't recall what round he was drafted, but I imagine the Seahawks don't regret it one bit.

Low/mid 5th, as I recall.

Edit - went at #149. 25 spots behind Watts.

Chiefs don’t need an elite “franchise punter” anymore like Colquitt.

Literally any ole punter will do.

Townsend ran a 4.75/40. I wonder if they don't do some weird shit to make sure teams have to defend against the fake more often. Sort of like the rolling out punt.

Yeah. If they would have dumped legitimate capital to get him I wouldn’t be pissed. He was the best college punter I’ve seen in a hell of a long time.

Could be a medlock thing where he gets ruined by a Squirmin Herman Mother****ing Sack of **** Edwards type coach, but goddamn he was really good at UT. And not just the MU game.

Townsend was bombing punts in warmups. He had some that were exceptionally long, and others with some tremendous hangtime. I was telling those I was with to check him out during warmups.
