In my view with The new kick off rules the key will be kicking the ball out of the end zone. The 5 yards penalty starting out at the 30 yard line just isn’t worth the risk of a run back under the new rules.

I think Butker can reliably always kick the ball out of the end zone unless there are adverse weather conditions. If that happens and we anticipate having to tackle then definitely either Reid or LRZ (If he can tackle —and I think that’s an unknown.)would be the best approach.

But the priority should generally be on kicking it out of the end zone whenever possible rather than tackling in my view.
I'm sure with an off season of practice they can probably get a pretty good run with it. It seems they are willing to give a little up for a more sure tackler. LRZ's speed combined with him being the first one moving could have him as the first guy to the ball.

So what are the qualities of a good kickoff specialist? I assume you'd want to drill some funky spin on a line drive with no hang time since coverage can't actually start until the ball is touched. And because of that youd want a kicker with speed who can get to the ball faster. I thought maybe there's something to drop kicking but that seems like it would just promote hang time?

It's going to suck if you have bad special teams. The Chiefs don't have that problem.

In fact, it plays to our favor. When kickoffs got their nuts cut off, it gave Toub nothing to do so he started looking for shit to incorporate (telling his shitty returners to take it out of the end zone every time, etc.)

Now? He's got his dream back. Kickoffs are an actual play he can coordinate.

For as much shit as Toub gets he is the most experienced STs coach in the game and we're crazy lucky to have him for this kind of massive change.

Yeah, I'm super ****ing excited to see what Toub can do with these new rules. The old rules made a special teams coordinator pretty useless and that sucked for us, because we actually have arguably the best ST coordinator of his generation. He's also got several guys that can potentially be really ****ing good returners. This isn't gonna be throwing Skyy Moore out there because the guy obviously couldn't pick up enough knowledge to be an actual WR.

I can't ****ing wait.

Why would this suck for the Chiefs or is this your typical doom and gloom shit take in which you write something without actually critically thinking about the statement just to cause a stir and get attention?

If you really think it's going to suck, then I'll tell you why it won't. The Chiefs aren't the only ones to be effected by the rules changes. Every team has to deal with it and luckily for us we are the only team with a Dave Toub and that gives us a massive advantage over every other team.

With the new rules enforcing the fact that if the ball lands inside the 20 to the end zone it has to be returned I would think a kickoff specialist would try to corner kick it.

I also think though teams will have 2 returners to try to prevent that.

I'm really still not sure why the best option would not be kicking the ball out of the back of the end zone. The ball goes to the 30 instead of the 25. Big whoop.

Probably and get some funky bounce on it. Though you run the risk of it going out of bounds within the 20

Not doom and gloom but special teams can be an equalizer. It can allow a worse team to compete more easily with a better team. Much more likely a team can take a kickoff to the house etc. It increases variance in a game that already has a ton of it.

As a fan I love it. As a fan of a good team I love it less.

In the USFL didn't the kicker have to make the tackle on 25%-40% of kickoffs. We dont want Butker making tackles and getting hurt. He's way to valuable as a late game kicker to win games.

Unless you are comfortable taking the ball at the 30 because its a touchback, thats the only scenario Butker should be doing kickoffs.
