In a normal game the gunners would have been all over the returner by the time the ball got there.

Same. Those were dark times as we all saw the punter (Colquitt) as the team MVP.

At least Herm/Haley/Crennel did a great job of making sure they got the ball in the hands of our best player.

-Sneed was so good last year. Hard to think Williams, Watson or anyone can come close to what he did.
-Gay’s speed was used frequently and will be hard to replace. Chenal is fast but not that fast (esp closing speed).

Really want Spags to put Jaden Hicks in that Willie Gay role on obvious passing downs bc of his size and speed.
I don't expect much of a fall-off, if any. The defense might even be better than last year's by the end of the season.

I consider Gay to be overrated. I don't think the front office thought twice about letting him walk. Obviously they're downgrading at Sneed's position, but there's still a lot of talent in the DB room. What they lose at that position will probably be offset by improvement elsewhere. Don't forget that this is a very young defense full of players that are likely to improve this season.

Chenal is actually faster. He's the most athletic LB we've probably ever had. 9.9 out of 10 on his draft RAS score.

faster 40, faster 20 yard split, faster 10 yard split, faster 3 cone, faster shuttle.

Slower skin color. That's it.

Even with that RAS score they are completely different plays. Chenal has great workout numbers but he isn't incredibly comfortable in space.

He's gotta be a strange guy to cover for.

I mean he can do everything right and still outkick the coverage. And that was occasionally an issue for him in college.

I mean I would think that with his leg strength, he could just sit on a 50 yard net by skying the shit out of everything and forcing fair catches after he got 5 seconds of hang. But he's never really been one to trade distance for height.

Flexibility seems to be the thing here.

Chenal isn't as fluid of an athlete in space as Gay was/is.

Nowhere close to as fluid as Gay.

Now if he has better awareness, it won't matter much (don't need to change directly as quickly and easily if you get to your spot every time). But don't sleep on Gay's ability to change directions with guys he has 40+ lbs on. He was damn impressive in that regard.

Chenal moves in straight lines and set angles. He's like trying to draw a picture with the straight line feature on Microsoft Paint.

Oh, and RAS is still ****ing reeruned.
