Name another athlete that you might consider for a list of best American athletes that quit on their team in a competition that only comes around every 4 years.

Simone withdrawing from the last Olympics is fair when talking GOAT status. I think it takes her out of the conversation given how great Phelps was. But that’s an insane narrative that she quit on her team. Incredibly dangerous to have the yips in gymnastics and it’s not good for the team either.
Michael Phelps missed a world championship because of off the field shit. Michael Jordan bailed completely on the sport out of nowhere and he’s one of my GOATs. Like, what are we doing here? |

I don’t think anyone would doubt that Messi is one of the best in the world even though he had the yips for some time on crucial PKs on the biggest of stages. It happens even to the best of the best.

Soccer isn't a real sport so please put that in another thread.

Ah, we're not talking about athletic ability, we're talking about awards/accomplishments?
My post was only about pure athletic ability. Anyone can swim. Most people can dribble a basketball. Don't know a soul that can do a gymnastics floor exercise, much less any of those moves that are named after Biles. And her sheer power to weight ratio should put her in the top 2 or three athletes anyway. |

Yah, that's kind of what I originally thought the thread was about. Watching her do one of those passes on the floor exercise and get what looked like 8-10 feet of air, do however many flips, and stick the landing, REPEATEDLY, was just incredible. Pound for pound, she's gotta be one of the most powerful athletes I've ever seen. |

She has a move named after her. That's pretty incredible.

Said this in the DC thread I believe: Why can't other athletes have the poise that she has.
She's the most famous US Olympic athlete, not only now, maybe ever. She keeps to herself, she doesn't get political, doesn't post shit on social media. She's a true statesman. Very impressed. |
