So why doesn’t the punt returner just bat every punt out of the back of the endzone?

It should almost be impossible to pin a team deep.

Because it was never possessed by the receiving team. It's the same as a punted ball that isn't muffed.

I agree that there shouldn't be a benefit to the muffing team, but it was called correctly by the rules.
