I think the idea of trading Melendez is crazy. He's a good enough stick to be used as a secondary catcher/DH. He's just as good defensively behind the plate as Perez and recent reports are he's much better at framing (which is a real weakness of Perez's game).

Give each of them 80 games behind the dish. Give Perez 3 games a week at DH. Give a couple to Melendez. Use the other 1-2 games at DH to rest other guys.

Melendez is also athletic enough to play 3B or LF/RF in a pinch. He's the second most valuable prospect in the system, IMO, behind Witt. Catchers who defend at Gold Glove levels and have 20 HR pop are ones you hang on to.

If they're going to trade a prospect, my money would be on Nick Pratto. With Pasquatino, they have a very similar performer who has some additional positives to his profile (Vinnie doesn't strike out as much).
GMDM trading Pratto and bringing back Eric Hosmer would totally be the flip Myers and replace him with Frenchy move of this new run.

Not that I'd argue if we got a James Shields-Wade Davis like return..

I don’t think the idea would be to bring in a vet. Probably just to let Santana/Dozier hold down 1B for most of 2022 while Pasquatino gets a crack at Omaha.

Ultimately, I think they’ll hold on to Pratto, though.

Id absolutely flip shit if they traded Pratto and brought back Hosmer, but it wouldn't surprise me whatsoever.

I'd be more surprised if they brought back Hosmer at this point than traded Pratto. I don't think we can discount moving one of our prospects, as GMDM has always been up to make trades, especially when those trades are what gives us the missing pieces we need for contention (or even the chance of it). As Duncan said, having 1B open would seem like too valuable of an option considering we're locked into Dozier's contract. I only mentioned Hos because there were a pretty loud group of Royals fans on Facebook and Twitter advocating we add Hos at the deadline (since SD would ALSO send a huge prospect along with him) all indications are that SD will do everything they can to move him this offseason, too. But the kicker in those talks is that SD is looking to shed Hosmer's salary, and as much as GMDM loves Hosmer, I don't think he'll add that salary considering Hos' steep declines on both offense AND defense.

But, if any GM would do it..

Padres have been abysmal since that players meeting Hosmer held. The guy seems to be a huge negative both on the field and in the clubhouse at this point. Not sure the prospect we'd also get is worth all that hassle.

Log jam at a premium position isn't the worse thing in the world, but MJ riding the pine half the time is not likely to be the plan. He's not even on the 40 man roster until this off season.
Catcher is a grueling position. Having two plus bats is s good thing, and being able to keep both bats in the lineup with fresh legs behind the plate would be a major plus, in my opinion. I see no reason to play Gallagher when MJ is so much more talented.

I mean, if the Padres are sending Robert Hassell Jr. with him, let’s talk. But they balked at that move at the deadline.

Interesting. Don’t know that I’ve ever seen this before from a team? Probably not a good idea.

What a bunch of whiny babies. Fans paid for the ticket, they can boo the shit out of you if you want. In fact, they pay your salaries. Sure, it's got to be annoying if your own fans boo you but this is just pure cringe.
