Would you make this trade?

The Kansas City Chiefs are looking to repeat as Super Bowl champions this upcoming season. The team has to spend some major money on Patrick Mahomes soon, and Chris Jones is also due for a major deal. Committing funds to one or two players will change the way the Chiefs operate. If the team holds off until 2021 to offer extensions, moves can still be made to acquire top talent this year. One player in particular is New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara. A Chiefs trade for Kamara is not that crazy when looking at the numbers. The team has just over $3 million in cap space (per spotrac) and Kamara is on the final year of his rookie deal and set to earn just over $2 million. He is a free agent in 2021, but can join the Chiefs for one season before hitting free agency. SHOP NOW: Fanatics has released their 2020 NFL Draft Hats! A trade package that should sway the Saints would be the Chiefs offering up running back Damien Williams, offensive guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, and a third-round pick. In return the Saints would send Kamara and a fifth-rounder. This move would see the Chiefs shed nearly $12 million in salary and get an upgrade at running back. The Saints would add Williams to a backfield featuring Latavius Murray and would get a high pick in return. Duvernay-Tardif is under contract through 2022 and started 14 games at guard last season. The key to this move happening is the Saints not wanting to offer an extension to Kamara in his contract year. If that is the case, the team can get a nice haul in return for a player who would be leaving after the season anyway. As for the Chiefs, they may become unstoppable offensively with Kamara in the backfield. I know this would never happen but I would do this trade in a heartbeat. I just don't think the Saints would make that trade. |

If they can't get some great value at the position it's fine to just pass. They can just sign one after the draft is over. |

Kamara is 24 years old. Damien is 28 years old. Kamara only has 3 seasons under his belt as a starter, and never rushed more than 194 times in a season. Kamara averages 5 yards/carry. Damien about 4. Explain how Kamara with less wear on the tires and higher efficiency is going to "burn out very quickly?" |

We would never be able to afford his new deal.

I am really surprised by some of the responses.
People want a new RB and want to spend a pick in the first 3 rounds on that RB. That can be done in this deal. We will likely get a 3rd comp pick when Kamara signs with another team next off season, basically getting the pick we trade back. Kamara is an upgrade over Williams and is cheaper. People want to get ride of LDT and his cap # that can be done with this trade. With the 5th coming back in the trade we can combine those picks and move up to get a replacement. All while giving us enough cap space to sign some FA or extend Jones. This trade would be a win win. |

I mean, ya I'd do that. Kamara is a hell of a receiving threat. But I can't see it happening.

Probably not, but so what? We trade for an upgrade at RB for 2020, and clear 12 million in cap space. The only problem is replacing LDT. But Kamara's pass pro skills might make up any fall off we might see there.

D Will is playoff hall of Famer. Has as many receiving TDs as the so called hall of Famer Julian Edelman

I'd do it. It's just a rental, but you'd get the comp pick and could put off drafting a RB for a year. That said, I doubt the Saints actually want to trade Kamara, and even if they did I'd imagine someone would beat that offer.

LDT took a step back this year. I wouldn't mind saving money on his contract. Williams isn't bad but, as other posters have said, he has missed several games each season with injury and take away 2 good runs and his ypc is actually pretty crappy. And Kamara is a much better receiver than Williams.
Could we replace LDT? Yes. Andy and Brett have replaced interior OL players several times and I think they could do it again. So is Kamara worth trading a 3rd for a 5th to rent for a year? I think so. We noticed a drop in this offense after we lost Kareem Hunt. Having an RB that is as much a receiving threat as a running threat would be worth it IMHO, particularly when next year we should have more cap room and more flexibility. Not to say we should use it to pay Kamara but with cap space what it is, doing this for a year does not seem unreasonable. |

I think I would rather use my 3rd round pick to draft a RB who will be cheap for the next 4 years and keep my guard and Superbowl winning RB, too.

Since then it's been a merry-go-round of Darrin Reaves, CJ Spiller, Damien Williams, Darrel Williams, LeSean McCoy, Carlos Hyde and Anthony Sherman. The Chiefs really need to draft a talented player that can carry the load in 2020 and beyond, not fish for another guy off the scrap heap. |
