Tamba drops a deuce on Alex Smith

I'll throw Florio a bone on this one... or maybe an anvil?

I’d be surprised if we got past New England anyhow.

As the next season confirmed, we weren’t really ready for them just yet.

And do you guys want to hold this as a black mark against Reid?
It's definitely on Reid. I think if he had to do it over again, he'd probably do it differently. I think Reid felt he was being prudent by not throwing Mahomes into the playoff fire after not starting all year. But Pat has proven since that the moment would not have been too big for him.

Kelce talked about it. Couldn't believe there was a rookie just slingin it with the scout team during practice. Reportedly he also made Justin Houston look silly during practice one day.

Safe to say, the team knew what they had going into next season.

Counterpoint: Reid wrecked Belichick in the NFL opener in that season with Alex when the Patriots didn’t know what was coming with Hill and Hunt. If they busted Mahomes out in the playoffs, that might’ve done the trick timing-wise to not give defenses the time to adjust properly.

Mahomes could have broken every rookie record. They kept their word to Smith and we have 3 more title so it hardly matters.

That’s nauseating? You’d rather blame him for the fact that he was a complete professional dedicated to the team who just didn’t have the generational talent of his predecessor?

Again, blame Reid and Veach. They were running things in 2017 and kept Alex as the starter. He didn’t sulk and throw a fit demanding that role because of his “feels.”
lol bro, i'm simply not into alex smith...there is nothing about it worth psychoanalyzing or worrying about. i'm sure you have your own guys you just don't care for also. to each their own.

also, your downvote only makes my loathing of alex smith that much stronger

That’s nice but totally irrelevant.!Reid wanted him to follow Alex and Mahomes had nothing but praise for that decision.

We'll never know what that alternate universe might have looked like, but it seems improbable that it could have been as great as the one we Chiefs fans live in today. The one game Mahomes played in 2017 was amazing and fed him experience and confidence. Then the absolute explosion in 2018 propelled him into super stardom. Has any first or second year player ever had a season anywhere close to that? Makes it hard to argue that any other path to developing and starting Mahomes could have been better.

Yeah, this discussion comes up and we all just assume Mahomes would've won a super bowl his rookie year and everything else would've played out the exact same. No one seems to understand the butterfly effect, EVERYTHING from that point on would've been drastically different, very likely worse than where we are right now.

Mahomes very likely was better than Smith his rookie year, but I wouldn't change any of that. What we have now unequivocally is the best timeline, I wouldn't trade it for anything.

For a point of reference I figured Mahomes would be the starter by mid season. Coulda, shoulda, woulda but it appears others felt the same. It's not a surprise.
