Falcons taking calls on Julio Jones

Quote:
A hamstring injury limited Jones to just nine games last season, though he still put up strong numbers when he was on the field. He caught 51 passes for 771 yards and three scores as the Falcons finished the year 4-12. From 2014-19, Jones missed only four games and averaged 104 catches and 1,564 yards per season. SI Link.

From Peter King:
Quote:
Surprises? Keep an eye on Atlanta. I can’t predict any bombshells. But a few things would not surprise me. Most notably, the Falcons putting the framework of a trade together for star wideout Julio Jones, and making the trade effective June 2. That way, Atlanta could split Jones’ cap charge between 2021 and 2022 instead of getting bashed with it all this year. So if such a trade happens, I expect it could involve a future pick or picks, nothing this year. (A future second-round pick as compensation seems fair to me.) Because such a trade wouldn’t be official till June, no picks in this draft could be involved. As for the interested team or teams, I would guess Las Vegas; Jon Gruden couldn’t resist Antonio Brown, and I doubt he could resist Julio Jones. New England too, and a couple of teams with clear receiver needs—Tennessee and Baltimore.

Now, the Falcons don’t really want to trade Julio Jones. He’s a franchise legend. But he’s 32, entering his 11th season, coming off a banged-up year with seven games missed due to injury, and the Falcons are in cap jail. If they could off-load his money and cushion it by splitting it between this year ($7.75 million) and next ($15.5 million), Atlanta’s cap charge on Jones this year goes down by a tad more than $15 million.

One final note here, to be very clear: I am not reporting the Falcons will trade Jones, or will probably trade Jones. I am saying it would not surprise me if it happened.

He's guaranteed $15M. The Chiefs have half that.

I'm not sure how you think that's going to work because it isn't.

Extend Mathieu. Done. In addition to I am sure four or five other ways Veach could pull out of his hat.

Currently only 12 teams have enough cap space to take on that $15 million. There is probably 0% chance hed be willing to go to 9 or 10 of those 12 teams.

And the salary cap is at least half a myth. This team was ready to out-bid the ridiculous Trent Williams contract a few months ago.
Petro had an Atlanta sports guy on today and they talked about Julio.

He said Julio looked fine in practice and could have played if they were in contention, but the Falcons were having such a shitty year, Julio decided it was not worth the risk.

He said Julio is a warrior playing through injuries. One game he got his hand smashed between two defender's helmets and received a large cut. They sewed it up at half-time and he went back out had 7 catches for 120 yards and a TD.

Also made the point that Julio was constantly doubled- something they could not do to him here in KC. Hill and Julio with single coverage.

Matthieu doesn't want to be extended or have you not gathered that by now?

The latest report is that he and the team are "far apart" on terms.

And Jones has no say over where he's traded unless the Falcons want to give him that right.

A buddy of mine traded for Julio in our high stakes fantasy league last year I told him over and over Julio wasn't going to play another down. Falcons were dog crap and out of contention. Also, you don't think he knew about his pending contract situation and the cap hell the Falcons were in? Why would he rush back to play meaningless games for a franchise that had him ear marked for a trade in the offseason. Injury stuff overblown IMO.

Lol you gather that from one cryptic tweet? Smh man come on. Tyrann wants his money. Chiefs don't want to reset the market for a 30 year old safety. Both sides are jockeying. Its business.

This was pretty much the gist of the report today. He says Julio could have played 3 or 4 more games if he wanted too. The games that he did play- totally dominated. Julio is far from being a broke dick.

It had nothing to do with Matthieu's tweet.

NFL.com and ESPN have both reported that they're not close to an extension. So the idea that you can just redo Matthieu's deal to sign Jones is false. He's not signing anytime soon or it would likely already be done.

He's not a brokedick but he's a huge risk at $15M guaranteed, plus a couple of decent draft picks.

The whole idea is absurd.

You're chasing after a name no matter the cost and the cost is simply too high.

Why does everyone want to save an old wide receiver who will be paid way too much this year?

seriously?

At this point- everyone knows his cost- you don't have to keep copy and pasting it every other post.

Julio, Reek, Kelce, Hardman, Clyde out of the backfield- it would be the greatest offense in the history of the NFL. Will it happen- probably not- but it's fun to think about.

Because Madden, if he's Julio Jones it basically can't be defended by anyone.

Who do you think is feeding that to the media? You think Mathieus agent is going to tell the media they are really close to a deal? Veach isnt going to tell Schefter he is willing to do whatever it takes to get Mathieu extended. Both sides are playing hardball.
