Falcons taking calls on Julio Jones

Quote:
A hamstring injury limited Jones to just nine games last season, though he still put up strong numbers when he was on the field. He caught 51 passes for 771 yards and three scores as the Falcons finished the year 4-12. From 2014-19, Jones missed only four games and averaged 104 catches and 1,564 yards per season. SI Link.

From Peter King:
Quote:
Surprises? Keep an eye on Atlanta. I can’t predict any bombshells. But a few things would not surprise me. Most notably, the Falcons putting the framework of a trade together for star wideout Julio Jones, and making the trade effective June 2. That way, Atlanta could split Jones’ cap charge between 2021 and 2022 instead of getting bashed with it all this year. So if such a trade happens, I expect it could involve a future pick or picks, nothing this year. (A future second-round pick as compensation seems fair to me.) Because such a trade wouldn’t be official till June, no picks in this draft could be involved. As for the interested team or teams, I would guess Las Vegas; Jon Gruden couldn’t resist Antonio Brown, and I doubt he could resist Julio Jones. New England too, and a couple of teams with clear receiver needs—Tennessee and Baltimore.

Now, the Falcons don’t really want to trade Julio Jones. He’s a franchise legend. But he’s 32, entering his 11th season, coming off a banged-up year with seven games missed due to injury, and the Falcons are in cap jail. If they could off-load his money and cushion it by splitting it between this year ($7.75 million) and next ($15.5 million), Atlanta’s cap charge on Jones this year goes down by a tad more than $15 million.

One final note here, to be very clear: I am not reporting the Falcons will trade Jones, or will probably trade Jones. I am saying it would not surprise me if it happened.

This! It is time to shit or get off the pot! Want no part of Julio or Fitz roll with what we have and if it does not work out, then draft again in 2022.

Honestly, I don't think we need either. Like I mentioned earlier in the thread, if we're gonna make a trade and bring on another big contract then call Minnesota and see if we can pry Hunter from them. I'd rather make that trade, have him take Frank's place next season and cut Frank. Regardless, we don't need Julio's contract or the price it's gonna cost to get Atlanta to let him go.
Yeah he had equal numbers (Julio actually had 360 more) if you ignore it took him 13 games to get that whereas it only took Julio 9. And that Julio over the past 3 years has 3800 yards and Fitz has 1900.

I get why people are concerned about an aging, expensive WR with injury concerns. But just imagine for a minute that this year Julio could perform at his 2019 level (99 catches for 1,394 yards in 15 games). That's not that crazy of a dream. With our re-vamped offensive line buying time for Mahomes, and Kelce and Hill already creating match-up nightmares all over the field. HOO boy! It's a gamble, but one with a very high payout if it hits. I'm not pining for it, but if the Chiefs decided to make the move I'd get behind and be excited to see it play out.

Dude, Julio had 99 catches on 157 targets.

Hil and Kelce combiend for 280 targets last year.

The Chiefs only had 611 targets as a team.

There's zero chance he produces in KC like he did in Atlanta. Zero. Unless you're taking away touches from the 2 best pass catchers on the team.

In terms of total output and production you're probably right. But he got those numbers by performing at an elite level. He's insanely good. We'd have a legit chance at 3 1,000 yard receivers. There would be no quarter for defenses we faced if he was playing at his 2019 level.

I posted this previously but do some research and look at some of the numbers some of the all-time greats posted at age 32, 33 and 34 years old. Moss, Carter, Owens, Fitzgerald, Rice, Harrison etc...They all had some of their most productive years of their career.

If he can stay healthy. You're banking on him just returning to form after having missed a half season and being injured off and on his entire career.

He's guaranteed $15M next year. It's just not possible.

How many of them have had a half dozen hamstring injuries in their career and surgery on their foot multiple times?

If they trade for him, they're $6M over the cap instantly.

And it's going to be grand to cut guys to swallow his $15M guaranteed salary only to have him get hurt and not contribute.

No. Not worth it.

In 2007, 30 year old Randy Moss was coming off a couple of disappointing seasons marked by nagging injuries. He was considered to be over the hill and on the decline.

Then the New England Patriots took a flier on him....

In 2007, the New England Patriots gave him a $2.5M contract with no signing bonus.

Julio Jones is guaranteed $15M.

Try again.
