Betamax was only one hour and sold only by Sony. Later they slowed the tape speed down to get to 2 hour but it hurt the picture quality and they had already lost the battle as other consumer brands had already adopted the VHS format. VHS was 2 hour before going to 4 hour developed by Matsushita/Panasonic and sold through Panasonic, Quasar, Magnavox, Zenith, RCA etc. Sony finally had to come over to the VHS format after losing the battle. Little known fact, VHS was not Matsushita/Panasonics first attempt at unseating Betamax. They came out with the short lived "great time machine" that was 2 hour but the tape was huge and picture quality sucked compared to Betamax. I had to go to school on servicing these monsters. Also, Matsushita/Panasonic had purchased the consumer electronics division from Motorola for 350 million and called it Quasar, the name that Motorola had used on their works in the drawer solid state TVs. Kind of interesting that they made one for 57, but apparently won't for 58. Clay must've put them out of business.

I owned one for a while, they were $1095 retail. They were first with the 2 hour capability.
At that time, it was all about how long you could record and that is the reason the Betamax lost, regardless of what other say. I was on the front line of that battle. People were willing to sacrifice a little quality for the ability to put an entire movie on one tape. Even when Sony slowed their tape down to 2 hour, it was too late as they didn't have the dealers or distribution. Vhs slowed theirs down to even a 6 hour capability. |
