The Motorcycle Discussion Thread

I figure there are some motorcycle guys/gals on CP, so I thought we could have a place to talk all things Motorcycles.

Tire Mount and Balance Prices (as of 10/29/16)

Prices based on if you remove the wheels yourself and bring the wheels and new tires with you:

Cycle Gear - $35 per wheel if you buy tires from them. $58 per wheel if you buy tires elsewhere
Rawhide - $65 per wheel (assuming it would be the same at other HD dealers. they book it at 1/2 hr per wheel)
C R Cycle Tires (DeSoto) - $30 per wheel

Cheapest I've found my Michelin Commander II's. Seem like they have good prices on other brands too.
http://www.jakewilson.com - Free 3 day shipping on orders over $75

Love the mini ape hangers and black pipes, very nice! I also like the green and black paint on the big touring bike.

Honda fury? I was seriously considering one before I bought my first Harley. Great looking bike. Just needs loud pipes.

VT1300CS Sabre. Looked at and took a test ride on a Fury. Loved the looks but with the extra rake didn't compare as well to the handling of the Sabre which has just slightly less rake. It is loud with the Cobra exhaust on it, just the right amount of rumble but at speed it is not annoying.

Gearing up to take the Road King on a trip to Georgia and was wondering a few things

What's the longest trip you have taken on your bike
What stuff do you have to have when you go
How far do you typically go a day

Never been anywhere near that far. A few hours, I guess.
I have a luggage rack on my Road King that I stack these nice Kuryakyn bags on. The 2nd one (Daily Tour Bag) stacks onto the other one.

Obviously I would pack clothes (not much), toiletry bag, at least a couple of bungees, and definitely rain gear.

I wouldn't ride more than 6-8 hours of ride time (not including stops). Wife and I rode down to Carthage, MO (about a 4 hour ride on a bike going the scenic route) about 3 weeks ago and stayed the weekend with our good friends. I actually packed my main luggage bag and also 2 rifles for target shooting on their farm.

Unfortunately, my bud needs to learn to look behind his truck better before backing out of the driveway. Hit my front fender with his ball hitch and pushed the bike backward about 18 inches. I'll post pics later.

Peak of ride season and it won't stop ****ing raining...

Mac, I would suggest finding a list of tools to make minor repairs and adjustments. Saved my ass more than a few times. The furthest I've gone was down to Arkansas, but there have been a couple of times I've been really thankful for the hand tools I had. I have a buddy that won't embark without a spare headlight, but that was more to do with his bike's vibration over 4-5 hours causing his headlight to go bad. Rain gear for sure. There are videos how to pack clothes to maximize space. You should only really take a bare minimum of clothes, 3 or 4 shirts, and a couple pair of jeans. Socks. Underwear if that's how you roll...

Last, but not least, grab a bottle of booze if you want to have a drink. You never know when you will run into a dry county or something stupid like that.

So I was shopping an R6 and while I can make the note easily, the ****ing insurance companies all want $330+ for insurance. **** that noise.

So, I'm looking at picking up a used V-Rod (09-2010 vintage) or a new 1200 Sportster.

What does the CP braintrust think is the better option of the 2? I'm mechanically capable so maintenance and fixing problems can be done without paying someone.
