Nate Taylor: Chiefs plan to extend Creed Humphrey and Trey Smith before season begins

Quote:
Throughout the next month — before the season opener Sept. 5 against the Baltimore Ravens — the Chiefs will attempt to sign Humphrey and Smith to lucrative contract extensions, a feat that Veach has yet to achieve this time of the year in the previous six seasons during his tenure.

“Your hope is that everybody gets paid,” Mahomes said. “I tell Veach all the time: ‘You draft too well.’ It’s a good problem to have. I’m excited for those guys and it all gets handled in the right way. The hope is to keep this core together. I’ll have that flexibility in my contract to help get them some money as much as possible.”

Along with Humphrey and Smith, the Chiefs also want to sign linebacker Nick Bolton (entering the last year of his rookie contract) and kicker Harrison Butker (entering the final year of his contract) to multiyear extensions.

My bad I was thinking we had an out after this season. IMO that makes it harder to pay Trey.

I was thinking the plan was to pay Smith and let Thuney go. One contract replaces the other with Morris or Nourzad playing LG after this year.

They've already been working Morris at G and he might be better served there.

Still feel like that return was a massive dick punch. How do we not even get a 2024 third for the guy? Ugh.
forgot about it being a 3rd. Thought it was a second.

Can we get a good to passable guard in the 3rd round?

Sure. Guard is one of the easiest positions in the NFL to draft.

Thuney may not play beyond this year. Then we would need to draft two guards.

That's only if the 2 interior linemen we drafted this season don't pan out. It also looks like Caliendo might have a chance to be good.

Nah - with Morris and Nourzad, you have one of those spots covered pretty easily, IMO.

Either of those guys could easily be able to start at G next season.

From what Nate described, the Chiefs and Trey Smith “want to make it work” but how realistic is that, really? Not exactly a stretch since Creed and Trey have been friends since high school.

They could try to stagger the hits to where both guys aren’t making a ton each season. They would have to cut Thuney after this year and probably Taylor after 2025, as well as not pay Bolton. But that’s not a biggie to me.

If I had to choose between Trey and Bolton, I’m taking Trey

How much do you think Bolton is getting? I can make an argument it's less than you think.

My guess is you do an extension, give him a bunch of money up front at signing, his first 2 years cap hit is pretty low and doesn't get expensive until year 3 when Taylor can be cut or restructured.

I could be totally off my rocker too.

I think that's probably fair, the people who think he's going to try to get paid like Warner or Roquan though, yea if he asks for that wave bye.

No way. Bolton is far more essential for the defense than Trey is for the offense.
