How? Slater has two years left. And given Harbitch is psycho enough to spend the pick on a LT they don't need, why wouldn't they re-sign him?

False equivalence.

The Chiefs weren't staring at an elite prospect at a position of need right in their face like Nabers. They also didn't have a franchise LT.

Why anyone ever thought Harbaugh as gonna take a WR that early was always kinda off to me.

It's just his nature and the way he wants to play.

The Chiefs had a LT on the franchise tag at the time, which is kinda the definition of "Franchise LT"

Except the franchise tag is often a stopgap while looking for a cheaper/better option. Albert wasn't under contract for two more years.

Fisher was rough around the edges early in his career but his fundamentals were there. Alt on the other hand plays more like a guard with his upright stance. A natural left tackle, the type you invest to protect your franchise QB needs to have that steady base or lower body posture. It's essential in playing the position. You can't easily throw them off balance by using a quick move and you can't overpower them.

The Chiefs had a plan to move Fisher into that LT role after just one season.

The Chargers don't. I'm pretty sure they're gonna make Alt rot on the right side his entire time in LA

I'd guess Slater walks, Alt goes to LT.

Is having 2 elite T's a problem?

You've got a top 5 pick. You want a RT. Fine. Then take the actual RT (JC Latham) instead of the LT you plan on converting. Yes, it's possible to take a guy from the left and move him to the right, but it doesn't always work. And if it does, sometimes it takes multiple seasons for the guy to feel actually comfortable.

It was a stupid pick.

A guy thats "A RT" draft propsect is usually more "not good enough to play T and will end up a G" prospect.

Alt is a legit elite T prospect. I'd take him and let the rest sort itself out.

It's not about that. I figured Harbaugh preferred RT over WR, but that doesn't make it any less of a bad move.

What the Chiefs had was a temporary fix at LT, not a young franchise LT with multiple years left on his rookie deal.

He also may not want to keep said rookie deal LT after his contract is up.

Not in a vacuum.

But when Malik Nabers was on the board? Yeah.

The Chargers taking an OT (when they only have 3 elite players on their roster and one plays OT) then the Raiders taking a TE (when they only have one blue-chip prospect on their roster who also plays TE) followed by the Broncos taking a 3rd round talent in the 1st - it was just a spectacular best case scenario given how high they were in a draft that was truly spectacular at the top.

Things couldn't have gone any better for us than they did.

That's fine, just not a good excuse to pass up on Malik Nabers.
