Nate Taylor: Chiefs plan to extend Creed Humphrey and Trey Smith before season begins

Quote:
Throughout the next month — before the season opener Sept. 5 against the Baltimore Ravens — the Chiefs will attempt to sign Humphrey and Smith to lucrative contract extensions, a feat that Veach has yet to achieve this time of the year in the previous six seasons during his tenure.

“Your hope is that everybody gets paid,” Mahomes said. “I tell Veach all the time: ‘You draft too well.’ It’s a good problem to have. I’m excited for those guys and it all gets handled in the right way. The hope is to keep this core together. I’ll have that flexibility in my contract to help get them some money as much as possible.”

Along with Humphrey and Smith, the Chiefs also want to sign linebacker Nick Bolton (entering the last year of his rookie contract) and kicker Harrison Butker (entering the final year of his contract) to multiyear extensions.

Right or left is fine because you can shift protections as needed, but I don't love the idea of loading up the G/C spot and cutting corners at both OT positions.
May have to draft one pretty early again next year.

I don't see why Smith would be interested in signing anything at this point anyway, being this close to free agency.

Nate Taylor saying it doesn't make it gospel. What else are the Chiefs gonna say? "We want to keep Creed but not Smith"? They're going to say they want to keep everyone in public and work to keep the guys they deem most important in private while trying to get a return on the ones they let walk if possible.

I'll trust whatever these guys do at this point. Clearly, Pat wants them both back and there is obviously a reason for that. We've been able to get away with lackluster play at tackle because of these guys, so I see the logic. I just hope Trey is taking a discount to stay and play for championships with his best buddy, because if they give him a $100 million dollar deal, that's going to be very hard to swallow. Then again, you also know that means Thuney is gone after this year which takes some of the financial burden away.

If Pat's happy, we all should be happy, regardless of if it's the way we think things should be done. If we lose players on D, so be it. You give 15 what he needs on offense, and he's already proven he can win it all with a middling defense. Just how it has to be in this era, we were never going to maintain a top 5 unit on both sides.

I mean, these guys even had Patrick's back at the WWE event. You can't let them leave.

Ultimately the IOL is the thing you can best scheme around. And Donald's retired, Reader is aging, Chris Jones ain't someone we have to deal with - there aren't a ton of truly impactful DTs out there at the moment.

Dexter Lawrence is a monster at the 0-tech; one of the most unique matchup problems in football.

Quinnen Williams is Chris Jones Light - excellent player for an NFC team that may/may not be a playoff team.

Derrick Brown - run stuffer; plays for a shit team.

Cameron Heyward -- Meh. Older and as likely as not to fall off a cliff.

Bucker - declining quickly, still a good player on a potential playoff team.

Simmons - potentially excellent but inconsistent. A problem if he's engaged

Jalen Carter - Monster talent, plays for a good team; a guy you worry about.

Hargrave - holder, pass rush specialist. Another potential headache.

Madubuike - first time he's ever really been a dynamic player last year and a potential problem if that's his new baseline.

Wilkins -- wouldn't mention but/for him going to a division rival. Might be damn good as a 3-tech.

So in terms of real headaches you have Madubuike, Wilkins, Carter, Hargrave and Williams?

I dunno - it isn't something to hand-waive but it seems unlikely that it needs to be something we allocate a metrick ****-ton of capital to avoid.
I know no qb can, I was just saying it's about the ONLY thing Mahomes can't work around (other than being down to your 4th and 5th tackle). We don't know the numbers yet, or if this is actually happening, but just making damn sure Mahomes has great protection up the middle is a pretty good recipe for success. Can we find cheaper guys? I'm sure we could, but we have the guys now. That's worth a lot regardless of positional value. I wouldn't be upset if they feel comfortable letting Trey walk, but I certainly don't mind a little bit of an overpay to just not worry about the middle of the line.

Read the article. It implies that they are trying to get deals done with guys to get the ball rolling. It says they want to sign Bolton and Butker too.

They can “want” to sign Trey all they want but I think that will end up being a mistake.

You can afford to do this when you will have a LT and LG on rookie contracts next season. You gotta keep the franchise protected.

So it would line up fine.
If they sign Trey and Creed then Thuney is obviously our after this year and Taylor is gonna be either extended to push out fake money or cut.

The big issue comes in the next 2 years for Karlaftis and McDuffie. Both will want huge contracts but idk if they can give it to both. Karlaftis will be tricky

Creeds going to want 16-17mil+ per season. I don't know if center is the position to give that money too especially when the chiefs have proven they are flat out amazing at developing them so I don't doubt they could easily get one at least 80-90% as good at Creed.

Isn't the highest paid center at 13.5 now? Why would he demand a 5m per jump?

I got alot of pushback recently when we talked about GK. If he has another year building on last year, he's gonna get/want 27/28 per year.

And they'll probably have to pay it if they wanna keep him.

Kelce was making 15 when he retired. The highest active is at 13.5 per. Maybe Creed would ask for less than the Kelce deal but I don't know if he would. I think 15 is where negotiations begin.
