alex helped lift this team up from the absolute pit that was 2012 and was more than welcoming to mahomes. yeah hindsight reveals mahomes could have started as a rookie, but i'm not crying over it now that we're rocking on 3 rings with likely more to come.

The other ****ing thing I can't stand about Alex? "He is who/what he is"

Even now I've seen some variant of that line used to describe him like 5 or 6 ****ing times in this thread alone.

It was used by his ballwashers and his detractors. I probably used it at some point too because I got infected with the dumb from everybody else ****ing using it.

What the **** does it even mean? It'd be one thing if it were a common sports cliche. I'd still hate it, but I'd understand its prevalent use. But I've NEVER seen it used to describe any other athlete. No other game managers get that label. No shitty players. No all pros or future HOFers, either. Just Alex. He's the only one who gets that line, as if no other athlete just is what that athlete is. And again.... WHAT THE **** DOES THAT MEAN?

"You got to keep getting opportunities, and there is a certain amount of luck in this, and I think unfortunately they've been on the wrong side of it a few times. And Kyle [Shanahan] has been on the wrong side of it even more.

"This kind of sustained success they're having, that is so rare. It's so rare, it's so hard to do and they just need to keep knocking at the door. And they're going to get it."

Shanahan, as a coach and offensive coordinator, has been on the losing end of three Super Bowls after his team held fourth-quarter leads. Widely regarded as one of the best coaches in the NFL, Shanahan -- similar to the early career of former Philadelphia Eagles and current Chiefs coach Andy Reid -- has come away empty-handed in the playoffs.

"And it's so funny that Kyle and the Niners have lost twice to the Chiefs and Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes, because this was kind of Andy's thing for so long, all the sustained success he had in Philly but couldn't win the big game," Smith added. "It kind of reminds me a little bit of what Kyle's going through.

"Clearly everybody recognized their offensive geniuses, some of the best coaches in the NFL and couldn't get it done. And all of a sudden you finally do and now Andy's on the Mount Rushmore of coaches. It can change very quickly and I think it's going to for Kyle and this Niners team."

Reid posted a 130-93-1 record in 14 seasons as the Eagles coach. Philadelphia made the playoffs nine times during his tenure and consistently was one of the best teams in the league. But Reid never won a Super Bowl.

Until seven years later when he finally hoisted the Vince Lombardi Trophy after defeating Shanahan and the 49ers in Super Bowl LIV. He went on to win two more against the Eagles in 2023 and of course San Francisco again in 2024.

Will Shanahan and the 49ers follow a similar path?

I've had my ups and downs with him for sure, but God Bless Alex for being an absolutely integral part of turning this franchise around... and also his impeccable graciousness in mentoring Mahomes, all while knowing it meant the end for him here

Thread took some interesting turns. CP never disappoints. My initial interest in the story had to do with Tamba deciding to share his less-than-flattering thoughts. Alex is a big boy, but that's not something I would have done to a former teammate. All said, God bless the 1st Amendment as well as Tamba, Alex & CP.

I get it....you just have a special kind of hate for Alex Smith and can't understand why everyone doesn't agree with you.

Referencing ptlyon's post...I am old enough to have seen all of the years of the Chiefs and the really crappy QB's this franchise has picked/traded for/gotten in free agency. In the litany of bad QB's this franchise has carried on the roster Alex Smith doesn't crack the Top 30.

I'm content enjoying the Mahomes Era and the 3 SB wins we have with him and the specter of a few more by the time I pass from this world.

Off the top of my head...

Kirk Cousins gets that exact same treatment.

Lamar gets that exact same treatment.

Guys who have some level of professional talent but also a very clear limitation that no one should be surprised about when it acts as a hindrance and they never clear a modestly low bar.

You don't need to be so mad about this, dude. Alex Smith was an average NFL starter. He didn't force his way onto the Chiefs and he represented an upswing in the team's fortunes which was exactly what the organization needed when Reid took over. Professionalism.

The greatest player in NFL history credits Alex for helping his development. That plus the way he always carried himself plus the fact that he came back from near death to play the game again kinda makes me feel like he deserves a little bit more respect than you seem to be willing to grant.

If you wanted to dislike him when he was on the Chiefs, fine. If you still wanted to hold a grudge when Mahomes came, wound up as the best ever, won 3 SBs, and credited Alex for helping, that seems weird. But given what the guy went through beyond that, in addition to all of the above, what in the actual ****?

Are you cryogenically frozen in 2016 and you see nothing beyond how you felt then? I don't understand any hate for this guy. Again, hate REID AND VEACH for making him the starter at that time if you want.
