This is starting to feel a lot like 1998

Yeah. This is a thread motivated entirely by being the the middle of a blowout on gameday and could find it's way to the Romper Room.

But, the super high expectations before the year, the off the field distractions with the coaching staff (Reid's son, Marty's bartender) and the legal problems from our players (Frank Clark and the host of 1998 players), and an inexplicable collapse. The only thing that's missing is a Monday Night Meltdown.

It's pretty damn close. Although the 98 team started 4-1 and then lost 5 of 6. But yea, a lot of similarities.

That was a "what could have been year" for sure.

At least we had a glimmer of hope until that crushing loss at Dallas late in the year. Losing to Andy's Eagles early ended up being a season swinging loss.

I said a while back that I hope the Brett Reid thing isn't our Yordano moment. An off the field turning point that sends us into the gutter. We've basically gotten our head punched in against every good team we've played since. It's really not bad luck at this point, it's a pattern.

Also it goes to show how hard it is to build a team through FA and trades. It works sometimes but other times it can completely backfire.

It also shows how much of our success in 2018 was reliant on near absolute perfection from Mahomes and playcalling from Andy.

Andy has just felt a step behind this year and Patrick has been pressing - but they have to be at that 2018 level each week to have a chance with this 2003 no pass rush defense.

Guess I could see the Britt thing being a snowball effect of SB distraction followed by things going downhill this season... part of me still thinks it's a very convenient fan narrative as we'll never really know. OTOH, the mental edge can be a pretty fine line.
