Router isssues

I have my own router and cable modem.

Router-Asus RT-AX3000. Dual band. It is about 3-4 years old.

Every few days, it needs to be restarted. My computer and phone are the first to disconnect.. Then other things slowly disconnect. It is quite annoying. I cannot pin it on anything that would make it have issues other than usage.

I have it set to restart once a week, but That is not the problem.

It is time to replace?

Besides, I am trying to watch Taylor Cole on Hallmark.

Have you gone into the router and updated the firmware yet?

If it is current the only other thing I can think of before your router being bad is that you are having dropped connections from the modem to the router causing it to have to reassign IP addresses as it makes the connection again causing you to lose internet.

This could be either issues with the connection from your ISP or something as simple as a bad ethernet cord.

I would do the following troubleshooting steps before spending money on a new router (note... I worked as a supervisor in tech support for an ISP in one of my past lives):

1 - If you have a different/backup/old router you can press back into service... do so and see if you continue having drops.

2 - Call the ISP and (some can and some cant) see what your current uptime on the modem is and if it matches the last time you power cycled the thing. I used to be able to see things like signal strength and used that determine what the issue might be.

3 - Swap out ethernet cables and see what happens.

4 - If modem is good, old router works, ethernet cables are good and properly seated... time for a new router. Which sucks because Asus used to be a top tier brand but I also just had an expensive Asus router take a shit on me 3 months past warranty.

I will start with the modem and ethernet connections.
I have my own modem too. Motorola.

I have Xfinity so I would rather be Scho63 getting it in both ends than having to talk to them. If I can get a live person.

Unfortunately I do not have any other capable routers to use. It is just weird that my computer goes first, then others slowly fade away.

Can you hardwire the modem directly to the computer and let it run for a while and see if you have issues?

If so, and you do... then you know the issue is likely with your modem or the connection to it (be it the coax connecting directly to it or the lines outside... squirrel chew is a constant problem and moreso in the winter when there is warmth to be found near those lines).

If you have no issues then... you know its something to do with the router.

Did you start having these problems after a firmware update with the router? if so, could you roll it back by manually installing a specific file?

Typically, even home routers will have logs which report errors. I have my own router and use the cable modem supplied. That also has WIFI and router capabilities. It has to be put into pass through mode which effectively disables the NAT functionality and my own router handles that. There were times where the cable company would re-enable the WIFI and router capabilities of the modem which would interfere with my own router. Effectively, double NAT which caused lots of lost connections and odd issues.

I think a lot of the legacy settings some of us older people are used to are probably gone with the mesh routers and phone guided setups. There used to be settings where you could determine how long a device would hold an address. You might also check to be sure that unwanted devices aren't connecting and causing you troubles. That should be in the logs.

Sounds like your modem may be starting to fail. Cable modems are much easier to buy yourself as it seems like CenturyLink DSL tries to force people to buy from the company at significant markup. I can't find an aftermarket one at all unless it's a refurb from a company supplier. Always make sure whatever you get is compatible with your ISP.

Sounds like a time out issue - if you can find a stable firmware I’d roll back.

I have unplugged and am not using a few remote/amazon plugs. Have not had an issue for a few weeks. I will keep an eye on it, but one may be an issue.

Will have to test the theory
