34 Chiefs on this roster dont have a contract after this year.
The Chiefs did a great job beinging back 20/22 from a SB winning team. But, with Mahomes contract looming, smoke and mirrors ain't going to work. The 2021/22 season is a separation point for this group of players that won us a SB. Cant franchise everyone. Who goes? Who do we pay?
Laurent Duvernay-Tardif Chris Jones Daniel Sorensen Sammy Watkins Damien Wilson Damien Williams Austin Reiter Tanoh Kpassagnon Bashaud Breeland Demarcus Robinson Darrel Williams Ben Niemann Charvarius Ward Anthony Sherman Byron Pringle Jackson Barton Andrew Wylie Deon Yelder Mike Pennel DeAndre Washington Antonio Hamilton Ricky Seals-Jones Taco Charlton Elijah McGuire Devaroe Lawrence Jordan Ta'amu Chris Lammons Ryan Hunter Andrew Soroh Emmanuel Smith Nick Keizer Tyler Newsome Braxton Hoyett Joe Fortson List is from overthecap.com |

Ward needs to be re signed but other than that everyone else can go. Wilson probably needs a new contract as well

This is why I LOL at all the people who respond with “Veach, pay the man!” when Chris Jones is brought up.
Also..... if there is no season..... the best chance of us running it back was just flushed down the toilet |

34 sounds like a big number, but it's not that scary. Half the dudes on that list aren't even going to be on this year's 55-man roster, at least not without bouncing around on the practice squad for some time. Their losses are negligible because they can easily be replaced by random JAGs. A couple players are RFAs. We can easily keep Ward and Niemann around for another year (yeah, I know we reeeeally need Niemann, right?).
And some guys like Anthony Sherman are just going to keep signing 1-year deals until he retires. We need a starting center, and Reiter will probably re-sign for dirt cheap, unless he gets above his station and demands a top 10 C contract, in which case... bye. We'll just use some guy already on the roster like Allegretti or go find another Reiter off the scrap heap. LDT... yeah, sorry doc. We're not paying our next guy that number. Everybody else on that list except for Jones is replaceable. And even then, our interior line isn't going to have the same unrelenting pass rush, but dynasties don't become dynasties by staying the same. They have different strengths and weaknesses from year to year. We may instead opt to find more interior guys like Nnadi instead of gap-shooters like Jones, who's honestly kind of a leftover from when we drafted him as a 1-gapper 3-4 end. That can honestly be just as effective of a defense when paired with an offense like ours. Plus, we've got Brendan Daly for at least another year. And... oh yeah. Draft picks. We have draft picks. We're actually going to have more than 7 next year, too. And if we have a little bit of luck developing one or two of these current drafted and undrafted rookies in our secondary as CB depth, we're going to keep on being just fine at the position. We'll be fine. |

You got a lot of “resign to a cheap deal” players there. No player is going to resign for a cheap deal that the NFL views as having talent. Except maybe a “Scruggs” type player that’s wanting one last shot at a SB. But, your not getting a playmaker who can change a game.

Assuming Chris Jones and Sammy Watkins are gone permanently after this upcoming season, the ONLY guy on that list that’s gonna cost any REAL money to re-sign is Chavarious Ward. The rest will be cheap short term deals, one year deals or guys we let walk who we already have replacements for on the roster.
Not worried at all about it. |
