Chiefs Injury Updates

Andy Reid provides 4 injury updates as Chiefs wrap up OTAs
Here’s what we know about injuries as Kansas City breaks for about five weeks.

As of Thursday afternoon, Kansas City Chiefs organized team activities (OTAs) are officially in the books. Head coach Andy Reid wrapped up this offseason period with one final press conference, providing some key injury notes.

Here’s what Reid had to say about several of the Chiefs in question ahead of next month’s training camp:

Left guard Joe Thuney

Thuney injured his pectoral muscle during last year’s playoff run. He was not present during any of the media’s looks at OTAs.

“Joe’s working his tail off, getting better,” said Reid. “We’ve got to see exactly how that thing works. I’m not sure. We’ve got to get clearance from the doctor and that whole process that goes on as we go, but he’s made good progress. He’ll be one of those guys that’s probably right on the border — whether he can go or not go from the healing part of it.”

Reid said Thuney should be ready for the regular season unless there is an unforeseen setback.

Wide receiver Xavier Worthy

Worthy injured his hamstring at some point during the early part of OTAs, and all he could do was watch from the sideline. Reid sounded optimistic about his chances to begin training camp on the field.

“He should be able to [start camp],” said Reid. “He’ll continue to get treatment here. He’s getting better. He’ll get treatment, and we’ll just see how he rehabs through that.”

Defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi and linebacker Leo Chenal

Nnadi suffered what was described as a triceps injury early on in last year’s playoff run, and Chenal has had issues with his back. Nnadi could only watch OTA practices, while Chenal was limited.

That said, Reid seemed encouraged by their progress behind the scenes.

“They’re both doing good,” said Reid. “Range of motion and Nnadi and Leo’s close. He’s done a nice job.”

Defensive lineman Charles Omenihu and cornerback Jaylen Watson

Reid did not mention Omenihu — who is recovering from the torn ACL he suffered in last year’s AFC Championship game — but he is expected to begin next month’s camp on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list.

Reid recently said Worthy was further along than Watson (offseason labrum surgery), who participated in position drills during OTAs but not scrimmaging. It is possible Watson could be limited to start training camp, but he seems headed in the right direction to be ready by September.

We have the best training staff with Rick Burkholer leading the way, no reason for concern.
