Another SB hypothetical

Sorry if this has already been discussed…

On the infamous holding play late in the 4th, what if Mahomes hit JuJu for a TD? If the flag is still thrown, do you accept the penalty and negate the TD? At that point would the “burn out the clock” strategy justify taking six points off the board?!?

And was Mahomes smart enough to overthrow that pass on purpose so it wasn’t possible for Andy to take the TD instead of the penalty? If he was 100% certain the play would be flagged, it’s a genius move…

Just random stuff running through my head…

Ask the question the other way: if you're the Eagles, what would you have rather the Chiefs have done? And the answer is - very clearly - scored the TD.
Yeup.

Given that he expressly told Jet NOT to score, he clearly had in mind that a 1st down was more valuable to them at that stage of the game than a touchdown.

This is essentially the same as the other poll - would you have rather seen them score a TD than hold for the FG? Because that's exactly what it would've been.

With a guaranteed first down? Absolutely.

It's rather simple. What's more likely to happen? A missed FG from 25 yards? Or your defense stopping the Eagles from marching down the field with 1:54 and scoring at TD?

We both know the answer.

I’d take the points but a 7 point lead is risky. The Eagles could easily drive down the field and get 8, and in certain they were confident they could do so

Anyone saying anything other than you take the penalty is an absolute moron and doesn't understand football or statistics. As Jason Kelce said after the penalty, games over! If the roles were reversed what would you have wanted the Eagles to do???

The choice is between giving the Eagles about 1 min 45 seconds to score 7 points or about 8 seconds to score 3 points.
You gotta go with the 8 second game.

Take the penalty and secure the win. Same as the slide. Not really that difficult

Has any HC ever taken a TD off the board in the SB? Hell, in any game?

I would take the penalty instead of the TD. Running out the clock was extremely important. The Eagles tried to let the Chiefs score a TD and McKinnon chose to slide at the 1 yard line.

No, but that's a function of the particular situation. For a team to take a TD off the board in that situation, they'd need to get both a TD and a penalty on the same play. That's hard to do.

Plenty of teams have been able to score a TD and chosen not to in order to run out the clock.

Okay. How many time outs did PHI have after the flag?
