Because it was the Marlins and Cardinals that wanted the meeting, not Stanton. For a meeting to even happen there has to be some sort of agreement between the teams on the terms of a trade deal, or movement towards a deal. I'm sure the meeting had more to do with the Cardinals wanting to know if they even had a shot of him waiving his NTC for St. Louis.

But, Stanton wants to play in LA and the Dodgers havent completely shut the door on trading for him, though they havent exactly made it a priority either. There isn't a team in the league that wouldnt want Stanton in their lineup and with his NTC he can afford to just sit back and force the Marlins to trade him exactly where he wants to go, even if it means they get 3rd tier return.

supposedly the Dodgers are not interested because of the luxury tax cap. They would have to pay double his salary. So how about they send us Puig and we pay some of the Marlins money to keep them under the cap?

Ohtani's list appears to be heavily west coast influenced as well and he's also meeting with the Giants.

Cardinals make a big splash in FA!

Hope he learned a bit over there in Japan and didn't just feast on lesser talent because his numbers in the majors would make me puke for $7-8M a year.

This is different than a FA situation. Both are going to put their best offer on the table, regardless of what other team is involved, it’s too risky not to.
He's stalling to try to get the Dodgers to make a play.

But the Marlins want salary relief and the Dodgers want to get under the luxury tax. He can wish in one hand and shit in the other...

I've moved on; it's almost certainly not going to happen. The delay is actually decent news because if he really wanted to go to SF as was originally reported, this would be done by now. Or if he absolutely refused to go to STL, I think this would still be done by now.

But it's clear that he really wanted to go to LA and that's just not there for him. So now he's choosing between a couple of backup plans and hasn't absolutely said no to STL...yet. I figure that happens in the next 24 hours, though.

If Stanton overplays his hand, they'll move Ozuna, Yelich and Gordon instead (may even give Yelich away if it means a team takes on Chen's contract as well; they could bundle Volquez and/or Ziegler w/ Ozuna if they wanted to) and he'll be stuck playing for a 60 win team in a market that doesn't give a shit about him for the next 3 years.

The Marlins aren't going to move him without ditching nearly all of that salary. And if the Dodgers refuse to exceed the cap, he's not going to LAD.

I suspect he relents and goes to SF. He marks time for 3 years, opts out and then goes to LAD in 2021. It's the path of least resistance.

Fox is keeping its sports and news networks.

Not sure why this would impact Cardinals tv rights.

The deal contemplates the sale of Fox's Nat Geo, Star, regional sports networks, movie studios and stakes in Sky and Hulu, among other properties. What would remain at Fox includes its news and business news divisions, broadcast network and Fox sports.

I can't see any way they can escape any obligation on the underlying rights deals to the respective ballclubs and if they still owe the money, it seems unlikely they wouldn't provide the content to as many viewers as possible.

We shall see. I'm not gonna lose sleep over it.

what about the idea that we pay the Dodgers money to keep them under the luxury tax and they send us some talent?

What are we, the Padres?

**** that. This isn't some AL team that we can worry about should they make it to the WS. If the Cardinals are in any way serious about competing for a pennant, ignoring the fact that this is a zero sum game so you can get Yasiel Puig (who they would never EVER attempt to acquire) is insane.

No way; it would have to be cripplingly painful for the Dodgers and considering that they almost blew up a trade for Darvish so they could avoid trading Alex Verdugo, who is a good but not great prospect (high floor guy; a bit Derrin Erstady, IMO) they are clearly putting a premium on any prospect in their system worth having.

So no, under no circumstances would I be conspiring with the enemy so we can make them 15% better while making ourselves 5% better. That's textbook also-ran shit that maybe I'd consider if we were 15 games better than the Dodgers are on paper. But seeing as how they're at least 10 games better than we are at the moment, I'm not the slightest bit interested in widening an already significant gap.

I should have reworded not about the money but it effects who owns the tv rights which would be ESPN.

While we're at it let's trade Bader to the Cubs straight up for Heyward and eat all of Heyward's salary.
