Falcons taking calls on Julio Jones

Quote:
A hamstring injury limited Jones to just nine games last season, though he still put up strong numbers when he was on the field. He caught 51 passes for 771 yards and three scores as the Falcons finished the year 4-12. From 2014-19, Jones missed only four games and averaged 104 catches and 1,564 yards per season. SI Link.

From Peter King:
Quote:
Surprises? Keep an eye on Atlanta. I can’t predict any bombshells. But a few things would not surprise me. Most notably, the Falcons putting the framework of a trade together for star wideout Julio Jones, and making the trade effective June 2. That way, Atlanta could split Jones’ cap charge between 2021 and 2022 instead of getting bashed with it all this year. So if such a trade happens, I expect it could involve a future pick or picks, nothing this year. (A future second-round pick as compensation seems fair to me.) Because such a trade wouldn’t be official till June, no picks in this draft could be involved. As for the interested team or teams, I would guess Las Vegas; Jon Gruden couldn’t resist Antonio Brown, and I doubt he could resist Julio Jones. New England too, and a couple of teams with clear receiver needs—Tennessee and Baltimore.

Now, the Falcons don’t really want to trade Julio Jones. He’s a franchise legend. But he’s 32, entering his 11th season, coming off a banged-up year with seven games missed due to injury, and the Falcons are in cap jail. If they could off-load his money and cushion it by splitting it between this year ($7.75 million) and next ($15.5 million), Atlanta’s cap charge on Jones this year goes down by a tad more than $15 million.

One final note here, to be very clear: I am not reporting the Falcons will trade Jones, or will probably trade Jones. I am saying it would not surprise me if it happened.

I think the avg fan and arm-chair GMs here @ CP need to stop caring so much about the salary cap and players' contracts. Focus on the game, not the money. Veach has cap tricks you never even knew were possible, we don't pay Orlando until next yr and will tag him anyway.

Julio IS the best WR in the game, if we could get him it would be incredible!

This is how franchises get destroyed...Chasing veterans with a name near the end of their prime window with a big number attached... see Daniel Snyder... Mahomes, with a vastly improved offensive line will make our #3 and #4 options look good, get a receiver in the draft. JMO

KC is a poor choice for older players. Having to play 17 games in a regular season gets bumped 2-3 more per season. Go to a lesser team, be "the guy." Get paid for being "the guy," and perhaps stretch that into 1 more paid season. Profit

Julio Jones is that type of talent. You are asking why fans are considering that type of talent to put next to Tyreek Hill and Travis freaking Kelce?

Jerry Rice had two of his best years at age 32 and 33.

Terrell Owens had two of his best years at age 33 and 34.

Cris Carter was still tearing it up at 32, 33 and 34.

The list goes on and on.
Well that's a nice handful of quality players who had nice seasons. Meanwhile there are 10,000 examples of WR's who completely fell off a cliff after thirty.

Veach's "tricks" involve moving money around year to year and changing certain bonuses to up front money.

Julio Jones has a BASE SALARY of $15M in 2021. You can't move that, you can't change it, you can't lower it. They'd have to give him a contract extension to change his number at all.

I think the average fan and arm-chair GM's here at CP need to start looking at players age and injury history before thinking that shit moves like this are a good idea.

What ended up happening to all those players?

Hint: they got hurt.

Each of those players would likely be listed on a top 25 Chiefs of all-time type of list.

That's a lot more indicative of the Chiefs history and not the talent level of those players.

Only one player you listed ever won a playoff game as a Chief and that guy had Super Bowl rings before coming here.

I don't disagree.

But they all in fact had careers cut short due to injury.

Older players get hurt.

Look, if you are not smart enough to notice the difference, specifically in the last decade, over what a franchise QB salary demands and the pressure this puts on Salary cap, then you are clueless. You may have a point if we didn't already have 2 top receiving targets in Hill and Kelce and we were just paying a bunch of JAGs. If this was the case, maybe you reach for JJ and hope he stays healthy and give up a 2nd round in this years draft to have a top target. But agian, we don't need to, if Mahomes has time with this revamped line, a lesser paid receiver or a rookie will fill that slot just fine.
