They had dudes like Hugh Douglas, Corey Simon and Shawn Barber thatis 4-3 personnel he just used a lot of zone blitz type of stuff that was innovative at the time for that defense.

On Whitlock's show, Marcellus Wiley said tackling is a mentality that comes from the top-down. Bob Sutton's passive-nature leads to a passive mentality from the players if it's misconstrued. We need a guy in here that has some personality – some meanness.

There is no way Reid is dumb enough to hire this guy to run a 3-4, right?

Also, if you want to restructure Houston and keep him, he'd be fine as a RDE in a 4-3. So you're really staying in a 3-4 to accommodate Dee Ford who gets blocked by WR's on running plays.
Your ILB'ers also don't fit the scheme worth a shit.
So literally, just to keep Ford.

Meanwhile, you have the last two #2 picks that were DE's in college that have struggled to play OLB in a 3-4 sitting there rusting.

why would you do that?

Yeah, I'm with you on that. KPass just is not an OLBer, and Speaks tried his best but is obviously out of position.

Nah if they wanted to stay in 3-4 they'd hire a 3-4 guy.

No.
refer to Andy's comment about the future of NFL defense and how it's 'inside pressure'. The shortest distance to the QB. You do that out of an even front.

I think it's clear that Andy's been thinking about this.

It could well be that Reid and Veach were literally planning a 4-3 move for this offseason. Think about it; The picks match 4-3. (Speaks, Nnadi, O'Daniel) The big contracts that you can get out of June 1st. Ford's contract coming up. It's THE time to make a change if you're going to.

I feel like at this point the idea we were ever going to hire a young DC was just us thinking. I don't think they ever viewed it as a real option. The way this team is run they basically need a DC that is the head coach of his side of the ball so they're gonna pick a guy that's been a HC before.

This is a great point RE the draft picks.

I actually think the future of the NFL is more of a hybrid look. Something akin to what Belichick has been running the past few years – the ability to flex between 3-4 and 4-3, between zone and man, in-game as-needed. As NFL offenses continue to blow the top of of the scoreboard, teams are going to have to be fluid and real-time in how they make adjustments in-game.

Maybe so but the future is not having 260lb men end up in coverage on WR's.

This is what I expected the second they drafted Speaks.

Real question though, who do you want them to hire?

God, I hate this kind of reductive thinking. Anyone with a resume is a retread.

No, I really think it's back to straight fundamentals; You need to be able to get there with your front 4, especially inside the tackles. You need LBers that can cover sideline to sideline, so they'll be smaller, 230 lb. guys that can cover slot recievers, TE's, and RB's as well as execute the odd blitz.

Secondary you need corners that can mirror and run. Safeties that are versatile and can play in run support or play centerfield. That flexibility is what you'll need to mask coverage. Who's going where and doing what? No easy reads.

I think the days of the back 7 being specific skillsets are out. Thumpers are out. SS only guys are out. LBers that can fly, cover, and fill sideline to sideline are in.
Speed kills.
