Brushes with Madness

Planet,

Today I was reminded of how often I live in a cocoon. I overheard some coworkers talking about a recent murder that happened in town, they then mentioned a past incident regarding a student and suspicious circumstances.

It turns out that a student committed suicide eight months ago by jumping off of a parking garage in town. Some months after his death, multiple witnesses came forward implicating him in the death of a professor, including bludgeoning and immolation, in a parking garage no less, eight years earlier. These witnesses claimed they were afraid to come forward for fear of reprisal.

It turns out that the now deceased student was a student of mine a few summers ago. He came off as a bit irascible, but it's difficult to conceptualize occupying a shared space with an alleged murderer for six hours a week.

Needless to say, spooky.

Any similar events from you all?

I don't know if I'd call it madness......but where I grew up (Pierre, SD)....11 people (8 teenagers) killed themselves in a 3 year period. The town only has 13,000 people. I personally knew 4 of them.

Back when i was a youngin' managing a movie theater, one of my employees was an older philipino lady (late 40's/early 50's). Real sweet lady. I had known her for about 2-3 years. She had been working there for years before i had even shown up. One day she didn't come to work. I found out later that day she had been murdered by her husband.

I had only seen her husband once in all the years she worked there. She rarely even talked about him. Old, nerdy white guy. He had thick glasses, pasty, looked like he didn't get out much.

Murder-Suicide. Never saw it coming. She was happy one day, gone the next.

My wife had a real close friend who was murdered by Mexican "coyotes" right here in San Diego.

Im not going to share the whole story because their are so many ultra right wing racist dick heads here, but it was pretty tragic.

There was at least one suicide pact for the 4 kids that I knew. They all agreed that if one person killed themselves....the others would follow. ****ing morons.

I had a friend go missing the year after high school, his dismembered body was found 3 months later. No one was ever charged, but you had the feeling people knew. It was some real Winter's Bone type shit that still gives me the creeps 18 years later. I'll take the KCMO weekend body counts over small town horror/shady police any day.

Her body was found months later in a dump in another city. It turns out she was one of the 41 victims of Gerald Stano, one of the most prolific mass murderers ever.

Years later, I was sitting in a small pub in Port Orange, Florida when a not very attractive women sat down next to me and first tried to get me to buy her a drink, then asked to borrow twenty dollars. The answer to each request was no. She eventually got up and left, but after that I would every now and then see her hanging around the bar.

I would eventually see her face again on the "picture tube". Her name was Aileen Wuornos, the female mass murderer who offed seven men here in the state of Florida. They made a movie called "Monster" about her starring Charlize Theron.

Why couldn't it have been Charlize who sit down and asked for me to buy her a drink that night...
What an amazing story!

I wonder how many men she would have killed had she been attractive?

Wow. I lead a (thankfully) sheltered life.

The best I have is my wife is from Herington. Apparently McVeigh (IIRC...anyway the OKC bomber that rented the truck from Herington) stayed a couple doors down from her grandma, and she had to be interrogated by the FBI.

She is an old brittish lady that doesn't hear worth a damn and has trouble tracking sometimes. I bet that was fun.

Oh, and mikey wins. Jesus dude.

I went to her condo a few months after the murder, just to get a feel for the surroundings and even made the drive from her place to his home (since demolished) on Rockingham.

Talk about creepy.
