National Review: Ocasio-Cortez: The Electoral College Is a ‘Scam’

Quote:
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D., N.Y.) on Monday called the U.S. Electoral College “a scam” that negatively affects minorities...

...“Due to severe racial disparities in certain states, the Electoral College effectively weighs white voters over voters of color, as opposed to a ‘one person, one vote’ system where all our votes are counted equally,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “Could you imagine if we had this kind of democracy-altering ‘fairness’ provision for literally any other group? If we weighed, for example, black and indigenous voters more because of unfairness?”...

It appears rodeo is about the only one that 'understands' AOC. That kind of tells us something.

Seems to me that approximately half the population of Mississippi consists of people of color.

Mississippi is one of those small states that benefits from the EC.

So all those people of color in Mississippi have votes that carry more weight than my vote in California.

I wonder what AOC would say to that? Has it crossed her mind?

That, in addition to the sheer ludicrousness of the entire argument. No state has race restrictions on who can live there.

****ing millennials. They're all off their rockers.

The math seems clear. The population ratio is higher.

So there’s the argument about representation differences between high population states and lower population states. But AOC takes it a step further and applies a racial filter so she can make a race based grievance out of it. We can agree that that last step is unsupportable and unacceptable, right?

OK, so I've read the article about cited in the OP, the article she cites in her ig video (here, and the article supporting this graph (from her article).

The simple fact is white votes are over counted in the electoral college, and rural votes are massively overcounted - this isn't true of young / old or rich / poor. I didn't hear her say the system is racist - did you?

What she is saying, because the way the states are being made up, white voters get a disproportionate say in the electoral college - she's right, and the data are quite clear. I don't think that's something that really requires a policy based solution, especially since there are so many better arguments for eliminating the electoral college, but alleviating that disparity would be a perk of eliminating the electoral college, and she's right that the disparity exists.

Why do you see it as a perk?

So you agree with / don't dispute those findings that white votes are over-represented in the electoral college based on how states are made up today?

And that rural votes are massively over represented?

Over represented relative to a hypothetical nationwide popular vote, yes. Over represented in our federalist system, no.

So why do you call it a perk? Does that mean you’d agree it would be “problematic” to manipulate the electorate primarily for explicitly racial reasons?

I call it a perk because in general it's better if citizens have a generally equal voice in our democracy.

What would you call it? A downside?

I'd call it a Republic.

Leftist regressive loons have been working to destroy the republic for decades. A republic restricts their ability to grab power by granting gifts from the treasury.

If the dems would have their last two presidents lose the popular vote and win the electoral college-they would think it was the best system ever.
