Will we make a big splash next year?

Listening to Veach’s presser and interview with Florio, he referenced that Clark told him not to use next year’s first to make a move this year (because the draft is in KC).

Now, some of the KC press tweeted it out and said that Veach “joked” about Clark saying that, but if you watch it, Veach isn’t joking, he’s just saying it. He then laughs when he says he told Clark that “Vegas is hosting this draft and don’t have a first.” That almost led me to believe they might have considered moving way up this year had Clark not shut it down.

In any event, it’s clearly important to Clark that we show well as the draft host next year, and that got me thinking: is there potential for us to make a huge trade up next year, if there’s a “dude” that Veach wants? If so, who? And how high?

It would have to be for a premium position of need, so maybe WR or Edge. Or, maybe there’s a Kyle Pitts type of player at TE or a freak DT?

Anyways, just throwing it out there, as maybe we can’t rule anything out.

Once KC cuts Clark and re-signs Orlando, they should end up around $30m in space.

If they can work out a 3-year extension for Jones that decreases his hit by 8-10 million, that'd be a huge win. I don't really want to see Jones go in a trade because he affects QBs regularly and it's not that easy to find defensive tackles that do that consistently.

The depth behind Jones in Wharton and Stallworth might be types that you re-sign, but also not that difficult to get from a 3rd/4th round guy either.

There should be a fairly solid market of run plugging defensive tackles to fill the voids of Nnadi and Saunders if one or both aren't brought back on short deals.

At WR, if Ross is a guy, then that would be a huge boost to the overall depth. If he's not a guy, then you're looking at a bigger issue IMO. I think we'll see a rotation of 1-year deals to fill that group out until Veach can build it back up.

Honestly, that seems to be the status quo in the NFL right now... Guys are taking 1-year deals more and more and banking on a breakout season to get a long-term lucrative deal. It makes it easier for teams to just fill voids cheap.

As for the question presented, no, I don't see a big splash incoming. Maybe another mid-tier move like we saw this year but that draft capital is too valuable for this team to rebuild the overall depth of the roster for the next few seasons right now.

Honestly, I don't see next year playing out too differently from this one. Probably a focus on ER and WR with early picks unless they can land a quality free agent, then use the 5 picks from the 3rd to 5th on DL and OL depth.

We're not likely to have anything but a late first, and the FA class of 2023 is severely lacking compared to 2022: https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/free-agents/2023/

If there's a splashy play, best I could imagine would be a 1st rd WR.

Which would be pretty exciting actually.
