Wallcrawler Review: Sniper Elite 5

Reviewed on Xbox One S

If you've played any of Rebellion's Sniper Elite Series, then you know quite a bit about what to expect in this franchise. Moreover, if you enjoyed your time in those games, then there is a lot to like in this latest installment of the series.

The killcam, which is basically THE selling point on these games, has been tweaked and improved this time around, offering much larger and more visible organs during the x ray shots as well as the ability to control the speed of the killcam and manipulate the camera slightly during the kill as well. Each well placed shot delivers a satisfying slow motion display the damage your bullets, or shrapnel have caused to the unfortunate enemy soldier.

The maps are much larger than in Sniper Elite 4, where those were around 600 meters square, the maps here are around 1000 meters square. That being said, its not all great. Some of the maps have some HORRIFIC claustrophobic, and linear sections. You may find yourself in the middle of a road, ambushed by enemy soldiers, and you CANNOT get off of that road to save your life. What looks like it should be an easy climb up a small hill through some underbrush is completely impassable. Small rock piles you take a step up and jump backwards off of it. You find yourself in situations where the only way out is forward through the enemy until the path opens, or retreating back the way you came.

In some areas it would be so much faster to simply take a beeline to the objective, but you find yourself blocked by mid height hills, or waist level barbed wire fences that simply break the immersion and can annoy the shit out of you if you happen to be in combat when encountering one of these "dead end" areas that are impassable.

Some of the most popular equipment of the series, Tripwire grenades, and S Mines, do not appear to be present in this game. Perhaps as a future DLC addition, one can only hope. In their place are the new Schu Mines, which can be used for non lethal takedowns, or used as a 5 or 30 second timed lure to draw enemies into a well placed teller mine, which seems to be the only plantable explosive in this game.

This installment encourages going over each map with a fine tooth comb to locate the workbenches in each map, that each unlock a portion of weapon modifications for specific weapon types. Customizations from Grip, Stock, Receiver, barrel, scope, attachment, magazine, etc. Each mod having pros and cons as to what it can do. While placing a leather pad on your rifle stock will reduce recoil, in return you get slower reload speed. In the end, while many of these options are neat, the visual aspect isnt really that big of a deal, and you will simply just go with whatever hits hardest, and is the most accurate.

Same with the different types of ammunition. Armor piercing is needed to tangle with enemy APCs and Tanks now, but the Match Ammo, Soft Point Ammo, and Sub Sonic ammo really dont matter. A player worth their salt is going to one shot kill most enemies with the standard ammo anyway.

A greater focus on difficulty seems to have been the objective here, as the amount of bandages you can carry is reduced to 3, and the number of Medkits that fully heal you, is reduced to 1. If hit by an enemy Sniper, you will bleed until you use a bandage to stop it. However, in this new installment, a medkit can be used to revive yourself if you are downed, and later through level progression, an option to use all bandages at once to revive can be unlocked.

This is an odd design choice, given the sheer scope of the customizable difficulty the developers have placed in the hands of the player. You can literally design this game to be as piss easy, or controller shatteringly difficult as you please.

Settings for Wind, Bullet Drop, Damage Dealt, Damage Received, Full Health Regeneration ala Call of Duty or Gears of War, Co op partner respawning if killed, Enemy aggression, Enemy Intelligence, Enemy accuracy, just about anything you could think of to tweak your experience, can be adjusted and tailor made to your liking, which is pretty cool.

The biggest feature that sets this installment apart from its predecessors is the AMAZING Invasion mode. This is a purely optional mode that players can turn on to engage in some PVP. Players playing a mission that get invaded have to not only contend with the enemy AI, but also a human player that is there simply to kill them. Throughout the map are phones that can be utilized to mark the enemy sniper's location, but does not permanently follow. It simply leaves a marker on the map that shows their location at the time the call was placed, and you need to work out where they could be from there. The game will auto save for the in-mission player at the point they are invaded, and they will be returned to that save point at the outcome of the battle.

Invading is really fun. Thr invader must play at the difficulty setting of the player being invaded.. The invader chooses one of the unlocked skins available and joins the ranks of the enemy force, with a fully maxed out from the start enemy sniper. Any AI enemies tagged by the player will then alert the player to the location of the enemy player if they spot them. The invasion phones placed throughout the maps for the allied player to use, can be booby trapped with grenades, and the invading player has the ability to tell all forces to stay sharp, heightening awareness for a short time.

For the best possible PVP experience, the invading player+Enemy AI vs 2 human players is the most fun.

Levelling up and getting all perks unlocked in single player is light years faster than it was in Sniper Elite 4. By the time I had completed the third mission, I only had a couple slots left to unlock, that being carry more bottles and decoys, and since I dont really use those, it didnt matter.

In traditional multiplayer, deathmatches and the like, sub classes can be fleshed out in order to best help your team, which provides some nice flavor to the matches. Playing as a medic in one life, or heavy assault in another, keeps the gameplay fresh as each sub class can be switched to each time you respawn.

Survival modes offer up to four different configurations of command post placement, upping the replay value a lot in these killfest modes.

Single player maps offer replay value as well, as different insertion points can be discovered on the maps, and once unlocked, new playthroughs of that mission can be started from any one of the unlocked points in the map.

Overall, this game is just more Sniper Elite. If you enjoyed the previous titles, theres a lot to like here. If you were waiting around to see a new game engine, or something more innovative than invasion mode, then your expectations may not be met.

As a player that played Sniper Elite 4 over these past 5 years and amassed over 28,000 kills during my time on the game, I find myself not wanting to put the controller down. Theres just something about the sniping, the planning, and those ridiculous kill cams that simply just never gets old.

8.5/10

Reviews show it as Sniper "REPEAT" than Elite. The second one was awesome! So was the 3rd. 4th and this one fail in comparison. I HATE the STEALTH mode in games. Just me.

Stealth isn't forced in this game, or Sniper Elite 4.

You play however you want.
