Deadwood

Movie's finally filming this fall. No, seriously. They're actually doing it after talking about it for two years.

that's due to the short vowel sounds. that's low frequency noise that stands out from the high frequency din of a bustling town, a herd on the move, or a Lakota war party screaming.

We never saw the HBO series and just started watching it this weekend on a suggestion.

I am also halfway through Red Dead 2 on PS4 so this is all very awesome at once.

I just started watching it because it popped up on my 'recommended Prime' queue.

Man...I'm just not a Timothy Olyphant guy. I've had friends swear that I need to watch Justified and I just couldn't get past Olyphant.

And I'm not sure I'm gonna be able to stick with Deadwood either. It just seems like he's overacting even when he's trying to be understated. I can't really tell you what it is about him that I don't like, but I tend to think actors work best when you forget they're acting. And for whatever reason, Olyphant ALWAYS looks like he's acting to me.

And frankly, Keith Carradine is kinda the same way for me. Now knowing a bit about the history here, I suspect that won't be a problem for too terribly long. But Carradine essentially playing David Carradine's Kung Fu part as Bill Hickok is just grating.

I'm mostly just gonna stick around to see if it becomes the "Ian McShane Saying Awful Things and Sounding Awesome While Doing It Happy Funtime Hour". If so, I'll stick around.

But Olyphant just isn't my thing, man. It's possible that I'll just always remember him being friggen TERRIBLE in Gone in 60 Seconds and that's what sticks with me. In a movie absolutely loaded with awful performances, he stands out. When Delroy Lindo and peak Hammy Cage can't even make you look good, then you really suck.

Bummer you don't like TO.
I liked him in "GO" and "The Girl Next Door" and on to "Deadwood" and "Justified" and "The Number four".

but yeah... deadwood becomes the "Ian McShane Saying Awful Things and Sounding Awesome While Doing It Happy Funtime Hour".

I totally forgot about Gone in 60 Seconds. Woof. That was really bad.

Shame though. Justified and Deadwood are amazing flicks.

I understand where you're at though.

I'd honestly go back and give Justified another look if you can stomach it. There is a hell of a lot of good story that you're missing out on. Finish out McShane Funtime Hour. That's worth it in and of itself.

Hey DJLN, you know who else was god ****ing awful in that movie? Giovanni Ribisi. He was just as God Awful as Olyphant. Doesn't make his performance in Sneaky Pete unwatchable.

I'd really recommend you giving Justified another try at the very least. There is a lot of good TV you're missing out on.

I'm was never a huge Timothy Olyphant fan, and think he was just OK in Deadwood. Other characters made that show. But Olyphant ****ing killed it in Justified. That show was all kinds of awesome.

So the way he's handling the character makes a little more sense now that I realize that I don't necessarily think he's trying to play the 'understated quiet hero' sort.

I realize at this point that he's mostly just playing something of a detached sociopath who's sense of morality is learned rather than innate.

I kinda feel like Wild Bill's arc was to attempt to instill a moral code in him because I feel like to this point any sense of right/wrong is based on little more than frontier pragmatism.

Doc appears to be the only halfway decent human being involved in this so far.

We put this one down halfway through season two because my wife couldn’t continue to watch so many despicable acts. Ha. I miss it and really enjoyed it though. I’m gonna watch the rest by myself when football season is over

Just got through Season 1, Episode 11 - I'm enjoying it more as it seems pretty apparent that the director realized about halfway through the season "holy shit, Ian McShane is KILLING IT..."

Episode 10 - Mr. Wu, is my favorite episode by a fair amount. You have some just outright hilarity with Al and the dope thief ("throw yourself off my balcony...") and him and Mr. Wu communicating via nothing but Mr. Wu changing the inflection of "one who sucks the penis!!!" is great. Then you have Rev. Smith clearly in his death throes just being a brutally tragic character. Adams shows up from the magistrate and does some nice work (and he's a nice way to get some exposition in there on the cat and mouse game between Al and Cy), Bullock is kinda finding a neutral ground. Just a really good episode.
