The Curious Case of Ilhan Omar

We shouldn't really be surprised.

In early August, 33-year-old Ilhan Omar became an overnight sensation in Minnesota politics. Her primary victory over 22-term incumbent Phyllis Kahn secured the Minnesota Democratic Farmer Labor Party (DFL) endorsement of Omarís candidacy to represent House District 60B in the state legislature.

Minneapolisís Star Tribune trumpeted Omarís victory in a huge headline on its front page, proclaiming that the Somali immigrantís victory had ďmade history.Ē The paper followed up with two more retrospective stories admiring Omarís triumph.

Omarís victory shouldnít have come as a surprise. She campaigned hard in the district, which includes the heart of the Cedar Riverside area now known as Little Mogadishu. Omarís third DFL primary opponent was Somali, as is her Republican challenger (who has since suspended his campaign). The Star Tribune nonetheless portrayed the win as a remarkable accomplishment, not only because Omar defeated Kahn, who is tied for the longest-serving legislator in state history, but also because of Omarís background. She spent time in a Kenyan refugee camp before settling in the Twin Cities in the late 1990s.

As many candidates do, Omar has made her personal background an integral part of her campaign. But neither the candidate nor the reporters who covered her have shown much interest in exploring one aspect of her personal story that recently came to public attention: the fact that she is not legally married to the man she advertises as the husband and the father of her three children.

In fact, she is legally married to another manówho may be her brother. A posting on the SomaliSpot discussion board alleged that Omar had married the man touted as her husband in 2002 before marrying her brother for fraudulent purposes in 2009. The post, which seems to have been written by someone from Minneapolisís Somali community, was quickly deleted. By the time it came to my attention, the post was only available via a Google cache (now also deleted). If the story is true, however, it suggests that Omar had engaged in some kind of dishonest activity in connection with her marriage to her brother (which by itself would be illegal).

It's hard to even take you idiots seriously. Demonstrate in a serious way some evidence that she is anti-American? In case you're confused, that was Rand Paul who voted against the 9/11 victims compensation funding. She voted for it.

A gun store's billboard targeting the congresswomen known as the 'Squad' is coming down

A controversial North Carolina billboard targeting four female members of Congress is coming down.

The sign for Cherokee Guns shows Reps. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley and Rashida Tlaib, who have come to be known as "The Squad" -- with "The 4 Horsemen Cometh" written above their photos. The "cometh" is crossed out and replaced with "are Idiots."

The store's owner, Doc Wacholz, said that he chose the women because of their "their message of turning this country into a socialist country," he told CNN affiliate WTVC.
President Donald Trump recently tweeted that "'Progressive' Democrat Congresswomen" should "go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came." He did not name them, but four congresswomen of color -- Ocasio-Cortez, Omar, Pressley and Tlaib -- have been outspoken about Trump's immigration policies. Three of the four are natural born US citizens, and Omar, who was born in Somalia, became a US citizen in 2000.
"I don't care if it was four white women or four white guys that had their view -- they'd be on the billboard," he said.
Tlaib denounced the billboard, saying in a tweet, "How the hell is this not inciting violence?"

Pressley said "racist rhetoric" from Trump "has made hate our new normal."

The billboard is being removed and another has already been designed, according to Danny Coleman, a salesman for the billboard company Allison Outdoor Advertising.
Wacholz changes the signs at that particular billboard about every three weeks, and the most recent had only been up since Tuesday, Coleman said.
The signs in the past also have been political, Coleman said.

"It broke our hearts that the controversy happened. Freedom of speech is a right. Unless it is something illegal or offensive, we use our best judgment and let it go. It is tragic what happened. He has been a great client of ours for a while, he just has his beliefs," Coleman said.
"I wish it hadn't happened," Coleman said. "I didn't want to hurt anybody. ... I hope that we can heal from it and people can forgive."

D.C. doctor alleges her husband left her for Rep. Ilhan Omar
Divorce filings claim that Omar is in a romantic relationship with her campaign fundraiser.
By Jim Spencer and Patrick Condon Star Tribune AUGUST 27, 2019 — 5:40PM

J. SCOTT APPLEWHITE – ASSOCIATED PRESS FILE
U.S. Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, shown in March. A Washington doctor alleged in divorce filings Tuesday that her husband, a national political consultant, left her after becoming romantically involved with Omar.

Washington – A Washington, D.C., physician alleged in divorce filings Tuesday that her husband, a national political consultant, left her after becoming romantically involved with U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, a client of his fundraising business.

The couple, parents of a 13-year-old son, have been separated since the alleged affair came to light around April 7, according to a family court petition filed in D.C. Superior Court.

Dr. Beth Mynett said her husband, Omar consultant Tim Mynett, confessed to her that he was “romantically involved with and in love with another woman, Ilhan Omar, a U.S. Representative from Minnesota.”

A spokesman for Omar declined comment. She has been legally married since last year to her long-time romantic companion, Ahmed Hirsi, the father of her three children in Minneapolis.

In a statement to the Star Tribune in June, Omar’s office said she has faced many false accusations about her personal life and that continuing to answer them was “not only demeaning to Ilhan, but to her entire family.”

Omar’s campaign paid nearly $160,000 to Mynett’s firm, E Street Group, over the first six months of the year, according to federal campaign finance records.

The Somali-born congresswoman from Minnesota has emerged as a controversial figure in her first term in Congress because of her outspoken criticism of the Israeli government’s treatment of Palestinians.

She also came under scrutiny earlier this year when a state campaign finance board disclosed that she had improperly filed tax returns in 2014 and 2015 with Hirsi while at the time legally married to but separated from another man. The episode renewed claims long promoted by conservative media bloggers that her previous marriage — allegedly to her brother — was part of an immigration scheme.

Omar has vehemently denied she was married to her brother, calling the allegation “false and ridiculous.”

Among those who have picked up on the accusation is President Donald Trump, who has been in a summerlong feud with Omar and three other Democratic House members, all women of color, known as the “Squad.”

“There’s a lot of talk about the fact that she was married to her brother,” Trump said to reporters at the White House in July. “I know nothing about it. I hear she was married to her brother. You’re asking me a question about it. I don’t know, but I’m sure that somebody would be looking at that.”

The Mynett divorce, first disclosed by the New York Post, is likely to open Omar to renewed scrutiny about her personal and marital life, already the subject of intense interest in the tabloid press, from New York to London.

London’s Daily Mail recently posted photographs of Omar and Tim Mynett dining in a Los Angeles restaurant in March a day after she made much-criticized remarks at a Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) banquet characterizing the 9/11 terrorist attacks as “some people did something.” Critics, including Trump, accused her of minimizing the attacks; Omar and her allies argued that she was making the point that all Muslims had been branded by the acts of a few.

The episode preceded the Mynett’s separation by two weeks. Beth Mynett said in her divorce filing that although she was “devastated by the betrayal and deceit” that preceded her husband’s declaration of love for Omar, she remained willing to “fight” for their marriage.

“(Tim Mynett), however, told her that was not an option for him,” her lawyers wrote.

Neither Tim Mynett, 38, nor Beth Mynett, 55, and her lawyers responded immediately to requests for comment Tuesday.

Tim Mynett is a long-time political operative who has worked for several current and past congressional Democrats, including Wisconsin U.S. Rep. Ron Kind, Oregon U.S. Sen. Jeff Merkley, former U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison, now the Minnesota Attorney General.

In declining comment, Omar’s office referred reporters to the Mynett’s E Street Group, which provided a statement from partner Will Hailer saying the firm “does not comment on the personal life of either our staff or clients.”

Hailer, a former top aide to Ellison, noted that in 2018 the firm played a part helping Omar win a multi-candidate Democratic primary, receiving almost 50 percent of the vote, before receiving the highest total votes for a non-incumbent in the general election. He said the firm helped raise more than $2.3 million this year for Omar’s re-election campaign “as she fights for – and organizes for – her constituents around a shared progressive bold agenda.”

Records show that Mynett has been particularly active in Omar’s successful campaign fundraising operation, which required extensive travel between Washington, Minnesota and other cities.

Beth Mynett’s divorce filing alludes to his frequent travel with Omar. “On reflection,” her filing states, “(Tim Mynett’s) more recent travel and long work hours now appear to be more related to his affair with Rep. Omar than with his actual work commitments, averaging 12 days per month from home over the past year.”

Beth Mynett, who works as medical director and health services administrator for the D.C. Department of Corrections, also faulted her husband for taking their son on a dinner outing with Omar while she was out of town — a time during which Omar was the subject of death threats.

“The defendant’s lack of judgment is troubling,” Mynett said in her filings. “Most concerning is that (Tim Mynett) put his son in harm’s way by taking him out in public with Rep. Omar who at the time had garnered a plethora of media attention along with death threats, on rising to the level of arresting the known would be assassin that same week.”

Beth Mynett is seeking joint legal custody for the son as well as primary physical custody. The couple has been married for seven years, though in a relationship for 14 years.

Omar has said previously that she has been involved with Hirsi, who she called the “love of my life,” since 2002, though they were not legally married until 2018, shortly before she was elected to Congress.
