Thoughts on value of used computer/components?
I have a buddy in need of a gaming rig and he wants to start playing Cities Skylines. His brother put together this build for him which I really don't like for the price.
Despite it's age, the 4770k is still punching well above it's weight class and most sites that compare processors have the Intel still outperforming the Ryzen 2 as a gaming machine. I'm thinking of offering him my old build. Tell me what you think please. I gauged most of the prices off reddit hardware swap. CPU: 4770k - $85 https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compar...600/1537vs3955 MoBo: Gigabyte Z97MX Gaming 5 - $50 Memory - x4 8GB HyperX DDR3 1866MHz - $60 CPU Cooler: Coolermaster NIC 84 - $25 PSU: Corsair CX750M - $30 Storage: Patriot 120GB SSD S3 / Seagate 4TB HDD - $50 Case: Fractal Node 804 w/ hard drive cages but the see through plastic is scuffed up pretty bad. Case includes x3 120mm fans. - $50 https://www.neweggbusiness.com/produ...=9b-11-352-047 GPU: Asus DUAL 1060 3GB - $150 Total price $500. What say you all? |

The rig you are proposing would be a decent price. SSD should be larger, but those are pretty cheap these days two swap in a larger one.
If he's really your buddy, I'd say $400-$450 would be a fairer price. My son is gaming on the same 1060 card, and it handles everything he wants to play. Funny thing is I bought it on a Black Friday deal for $180 I think. I definitely wouldn't pay the price for the components listed on the brother's build. |

4th gen Core processor is rough. It might have the horse power but the architecture has changed so much since then, I wouldn't consider putting into any machine designed for gaming in 2021.

Both of those CPUs are old and shitty. Don't give somebody that for their first gaming PC. You can get 11th gen Intel CPU for cheaper than that price for the old AMD.
Intel i5-11600K $219: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08X67YZBL...ogi&th=1&psc=1 Both of those GPUs are turds too. I'd be really disappointed in either of those to be honest. But GPU is going to be the biggest price difference in the build. And 500GB is going to limit the number of games he can play in the first build. |
