Behind the Curve: Netflix Flat-Earther Doc
It digs into the flat-earth community and gives the viewer a taste of conspiracy theory nutjobs.
I thought it was really interesting, if for no other reason than the inside look at conspiracy theorists. Anyone else watch it? |

I watched it. It was pretty interesting. There was some good commentary from mainstream scientists and psychologists talking about how those ideas form and the impact one belief has on so many other ideas that you then have to account for, such as the government cover up.
The end had a few good moments especially with the science fiction writer talking about the allure of being a flat earther to become your own Disney protagonist, the Mark Sargeant guy confronting the idea he is the mayor in The Truman Show from his analogy and now has to believe it no matter what, and then of course the experiment not going too well for them. |

I saw it in the Netflix menu, laughed for a few minutes, and then moved on without watching it.

I don't understand why people get so worked up over benign misconceptions.
Flat earthers could not be more wrong, but then Raiders fans could not be more wrong either. It would be one thing if we as a society were faced with the threat of a flat earth caucus imposing some kind of flat earth inspired authoritarian regime. But it's just dumb people with dumb notions about reality. It's no more threatening than astrology, or crystals, or believing that Himalayan salt lamps produce healthy negative ions. It's considerably less threatening than anti-vaccine, or homeopathy, or centralized federal power. |

People that think Paris is a country and the Sudan is a restaurant get to vote too. Get over it.

I don't really give a shit. Until I'm made emperor this planet will just have to suffer. The whole "who cares" stop pointing it out thing seems odd though. To me it's no different than letting someone know they have spinach in their teeth or their shoes are untied. They may like that they have food in their teeth or are looking forward to tripping, which is absolutely fine. It would just be rude not to point it out. Just in case. |
