I think it's a little different in that in the sense that it was a planned course of action. There was no "let's do #2 and hope it does well enough to do #3." Instead, it was a plan from the beginning that they wanted to tell the story this way.
Sure, the money's good, but this series feels different enough that I don't think it was purely a money grab.
