If you're doing your open water dive in the midwest, don't expect a very interesting dive because most of the waters in our area have very poor visibility. If you get a chance to go back to a place like the Caymans, it's a fantastic experience.

I always wanted to dive the Bon Terre lead mines (in the SE corner of MO), but I never got around to it. That seems like it would be pretty interesting.
Open water will be at beaver lake. Visibility ranges 15-30 feet.
