They probably figured it was a risk worth taking this year to try and make a run in the playoffs.

He's not guaranteed much of anything past this year, but his salary would still be 18 and then 19 million plus some fairly substantial roster per game roster bonuses.
He's not going to be cheap if they want to keep him after this season. Though in terms of actual long-term risk, there really isn't any for them.
